Gwenneth put her paws on Jeff's shoulder and looked down into Jeff's sightless eyes. ::Out like a light,:: she commented dryly to Alexis. ::I wish he could hear you, child. He might listen for once.::
She sighed and curled up on the boy's chest protectively. ::Monet, Rio-- what are we to do? Should we take him back to the camp? I think not; he would certainly blame Alexis, and she has suffered enough at his hands.:: The tiny liren smiled kindly at the pale g.irl. ::I have an idea... If you are willing, sweet Alexis.:: She sat up suddenly, golden eyes burning with intense thought. She expanded her mindlink to include Gabriel, the Jellicles, and Angelina.
::The boy does not trust Gabriel, nor Rio-- not as far as he could throw you, I'm afraid. The Jellicles he fears, perhaps more than the Cheysuli, because they do not wear a form his mind will accept.:: ((Kaleadora grinned at Nashota.)) ::Myself, I cannot speak to him-- my efforts thus far have been in vain, for he thinks me a mere pet. To go on as I have been all his life would be beating my head against a wall. But Alexis... And you, child,:: she added, clearly indicating Angelina. ((Angie sat up very straight, looking both horrified and intrigued.)) The cat looked gravely at Alexis as she spoke, and kept her mental eyes focused on Angie.
::Children-- you two are perhaps my boy's only hope at this point. You appear very human...:: ((she smiled)) ::...And can speak to and interact with the boy without displaying any part of your magical properties. You-- the two of you, together-- could reach him. You could break through the barrier he's put around his heart, I know you could!:: She leaned forward and put a tiny paw on Alexis's arm. ((Back at the camp, Angie rubbed her arm uncomfortably.)) ::Alexis, Angelina-- if you are willing, you could save his life. He is dying now, for the whole world is pitted against him-- but you could show him life and love. Only when his heart is open will he accept the assistance that Gabriel, Rio, and myself are offering.::
She sat up again, blinking away tears. ::You would travel. Take him anywhere he wants to go-- anywhere except non-magic human settlements. The rest of us would follow behind at a safe distance, never interfering but keeping watch, guarding you. And in time, the boy will find himself ready to face us again.
::Angelina!::
Angie winced, and looked around wildly at Gabriel, Nashota, and Kaleadora as they stared at her in astonishment.
::Angelina,:: Gwenneth continued softly. ::Will you help my boy?::
::Okay, look, I don't know what's going on around here,:: Angie said, standing up quickly and backing away from the fire, ::but you guys are all really creeping me out.::
::Child, my boy is Cheysuli,:: Gwenneth said gently. Angie stopped, and gulped hard. ::He will not accept it. From birth he has been raised a normal human. But if his mind is not healed, if his heart is not opened, he will die, and so shall I. The bond between a Cheysuli and his lir is life to both of them. The boy and I have been deprived of this all our lives.:: She sighed wearily, and suddenly the tiny cat looked very old and tired to Rio, Monet, and Alexis. ::We are wasting away, Angelina.
::You have not been brought here by accident. You and Kaleadora did not become friends by accident, nor did you follow her here simply on a careless whim. You were meant to be here; can't you see that? Can't you accept that?::
::Stop it!:: Angie cried, stumbling to her knees. Kaleadora started to her feet, but at a glance from Nashota did not move farther.
::G.irl, come here!:: Gwenneth said sternly. In the blink of an eye, the frightened Angie disappeared from the camp. Kaleadora cried out and in a single leap landed where her friend had been standing, looking around. But the liren continued to speak, and Kalea quieted as she realized where Angie had been taken.
Angelina landed in a heap directly beside Jeff, and looked with wide, frightened eyes at the boy's unconscious body, the little cat sitting on it, and the pale g.irl on the other side.
"Hey, what are you..." she started, but the cat interrupted her.
::Look at him, child,:: she whispered. Almost against her will, Angie lowered her gaze to view the boy's face. ((Back at the camp, Kaleadora raised her ears, every muscle tense.)) ::His name is Jeffrey Ryan,:: Gwenneth continued. ::He is fifteen years old, and his birthday is in two months. He grew up in a large city with a fifty-foot wall all around it. He has a mother and a father, four sisters and three brothers. He has gone to school since he was five. But right now he is utterly alone, experiencing a million different things he never even considered as possible. And he is dying.::
Angie frowned at the bluntness of this statement, and sighed as the cat fell silent. She studied the boy's face-- he was pale and wan, his cheeks sunken and hair lank. She smiled suddenly; just a little, but there it was.
"He's got freckles, too," she whispered. "An' red hair..."
Gwenneth smiled. ::Angelina, will you help my boy?::
((Kaleadora looked at Gabriel and Nashota, her eyes wide.))
Angie gulped again. She looked around, sensing the presence of Monet and Rio, but her eyes came to rest on Alexis. There was a long moment of complete silence, broken only by Jeffrey's labored breathing.
::Only if she will,:: Angelina whispered.
With tear-filled eyes, Gwenneth turned to look at Alexis. ::Alexis,:: she murmured, ::will you help my boy?::
((Wow, that was longer than I meant it to be. Sorry. *grins*))
