Kalea wrinkled her nose and went slightly cross-eyed. "I dunno. I just wish they weren't so mean."
She pranced up the path a bit, jumping around small stones, then paused and tilted her head. She spoke to her sister's mind: ::I think they're scared because they know we're more powerful, and there's nothing they can do about it. I mean, it's not their fault they're made diff'rent than us. But they're scared, anyhow.:: She batted a pebble around for a moment, aimlessly, and then suddenly started up. Every muscle taut and ears erect, she stared, without moving, down the path.
::I heard something,:: she said softly to Nashota. She crept closer to her older sister and together they melted into the shadows of some low bushes, watchful.
Suddenly, without warning, a very large form leapt onto the path. Kalea had neither heard nor smelled it coming, and her eyes nearly bulged from her head, she stared so hard, for she had never seen such a creature before. It was fully feline, somewhat like a cougar but built lightly and speedily, with enormous golden eyes matching the patches of gold against the black and white of its fur. It had landed in the exact middle of the path and stood quite still.
Then, with a quick, sharp movement, it turned its head and stared directly at Nashota and Kaleadora. Its eyes widened and its mouth opened slightly, and it was obvious that it was startled and unnerved to see them there. It took a few steps towards the bushes on the far side of the path, never moving its eyes from them, and then in the blink of an eye it was gone. Kalea strained but could neither hear the creature running nor catch a whiff of its scent.
Turning to her sister slowly, Kalea whispered fearfully, ::Nashy, what was that??::
