Gwenneth dashed through the woods in great leaps, and the land seemed to melt away behind her. The morning was waning, and behind the roiling stormclouds she could sense the sun riding high overhead. In only a few moments she could see the city walls looming on the horizon, and she quickened her pace. She dreaded her task, but at least now she had a purpose, and it drove her onward.
Suddenly, she could sense an alien presence very close by. Its proximity and intensity startled her so that she slowed to a halt, leaping silently to land in the middle of a path that broadened into the main road leading to the city gates. She stood absolutely still, reaching out boldly with a mind-touch to scan the area.
And there they were-- two strange lifeforms not twenty yards from where she stood. Gwenneth turned her head sharply to view them, and what she saw made her heart falter for a moment in her chest.
Jellicles.
A pair of females, crouching close side-by-side, staring right back at her. Even Gwenneveire, who was considered powerful among the lirs, feared the Jellicles. She didn't move for a long moment, half-fearing that they would attack, but then she noticed their youth and the tense, surprised way they held their position. She stepped hesitantly for the bushes, watching the Jellicles warily, and then all in a rush she bounded away. She touched a speed she rarely had before, and for an instant she felt as though she were running for her life. But the Jellicles did not follow, did not even move, and Gwenneth gladly shifted her mind from them. But this did complicate slightly her meeting with Gabriel and Rio once Jeff had been collected... Gwenneth had not known that a Jellicle tribe lay so close to the city. Greater caution would have to be employed.
As she neared the edge of the woods, Gwenneth's great form fizzled away, leaving only the tiny calico housecat, and then this form faded into nothingness as she approached the fields. A moment later, a small shadow could be seen creeping through the arrow-slits at the top of the wall.
Gwenneth headed straight for her family's house, hoping that her boy would be home for the lunch hour.
