Jeff's face flamed bright crimson. Never in all of his life had a , besides one of his sisters, said more than two words to him. And now there was this gorgeous, sweet, kind female in distress who was actually speaking civally to him and trusting him and had actually kissed him on the cheek. Jeff's mind whirled as the , Alexis, laid her head on his shoulder. The soft, pale, moon-bright fall of her hair rested close to his cheek, and her arms were curled unabashedly around his neck. As though from far away, Jeff watched his own arm reach out to hold around Alexis's waist, to steady her. He didn't trust himself to speak, he felt so lightheaded, so he just started off, watching in concern as Alexis limped severely on her hurt ankle.

"Here," he croaked, wincing at himself, and stooped to gently lift the into his arms. She was light as a feather, and Jeff walked along briskly with her white face close to his, staring studiously past her as she laughed delightedly.

Ignoring the terrified pounding of his heart at the nearness of this , Jeff strode quickly in the direction of the river; he could hear it, running along swiftly through the woods, and after a moment he caught a few glimpses of the afternoon sun glinting on its surface, through the undergrowth.

"A-... al-..." he stammered, and cleared his throat. "Almost there, miss..."
