Angie looked at the Silent Paw's purple eyes, suddenly wary as she saw the emotions brimming there. "Why don't you speak?" she whispered. "Just say something, stupid, you wouldn't shut up earlier...." But Nomis just shook his head with a shrug, and Angie understood. She glanced away, noting the locations of her captors just to avoid looking at her disabled companion, when suddenly she felt his touch on her leg, a big black paw offering comfort in the only way he was able. Nomis nudged her hand gently and his breath was warm on her fingers.
And suddenly Angie felt like crying. She did not know why - it was something that girl Alexis would do in a situation like this, not her! - but she could not stop it. Her eyes burned and when she blinked a tear slipped down, leaving a trail down her grimy cheek.
"Where are we?" she burst out, looking at the shadows in a sudden flare of anger. "What do you want with us? Answer me!"
The shadows laughed. It was a sound like stones rattling down a deep gully, harsh and cacophonic and echoing in her mind, and she cowered against Nomis's flank, helpless beneath the power of that sound. The Silent Paw wrapped his tail around the girl's leg to comfort her.
::Bana must wait,:: said one voice, the voice of the one who had brought Nomis. ::Time is coming, yes. Release of shadows, when we can walk free in the world of free air. Patience, Bana. Have brought friend, now keep quiet. Time is coming.::
Angie sniffed, hiding her face in the soft fur of Nomis's shoulder, feeling like a small child in the embrace of a parent or older sibling. I'm scared, she wanted to say, but she did not dare admit it in front of the abominable shadow-creatures. Instead she wiggled her loose front tooth with her tongue, listening to the steady beat of her friend's heart.
