Cubic Corporation (AMEX: CUB), as a principal shareholder in TranSys (Transaction Systems Limited) provided existing equipment upgrades, as well as new state-of-the-art automatic passenger gates, ticket vending machines, bus ticketing equipment, smart card reader technology, and is performing maintenance on the system. ------------------------------------------------------------ The infrastructure is substantially complete and, after months of field testing, the card, called Oyster, has been given to almost 80,000 Tube and bus staff in the first stage of a managed roll out which will continue through 2003. ------------------------------------------------------------ “This marks the start of a ticketing revolution in London. The card is a major step forward for London and the millions of people who use the capital’s transport network every day. From next year the travelling public can look forward to less queuing to buy tickets and faster movement through ticket gates and onto buses. This new technology will play an important part in modernizing London’s transport,” said Mayor of London, Mr. Ken Livingstone. ----------------------------------------------------------- The system has been financed, designed, manufactured, and installed by TranSys for Transport for London and London Underground. TranSys is led by two principal shareholders, EDS (Electronic Data Systems) and Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS), and was awarded an innovative contract in 1998. After four years in the delivery stage, the concession is now transitioning into the operations phase which extends to 2015. Cubic, as the supplier of all systems assets to TranSys, has equipped 6,000 buses and 255 Tube stations to take the new Oyster cards, and installed a comprehensive data acquisition and control system to support ongoing operations, revenue management, and reporting. The overall solution is integrated and built upon a foundation of Cubic technology, which has been operational in the London Underground since the mid 1980s. ----------------------------------------------------------- The credit card sized Oyster cards contain a microchip which is embedded within the card. The card simply needs to be touched onto the card readers on buses or at gates. For some, the Oyster card will carry their period ticket while others will use the card for the new PrePay (‘pay-as-you-go’) facility. However, magnetic stripe ticketing options will continue to be made available for a large proportion of customers for the foreseeable future. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Oyster card will be more secure and it will speed up journeys by cutting down on the number of people paying a bus driver and reducing the number of trips to the ticket office. The cards will also make it even easier to switch between different modes of transport – ultimately they will work right across the network including trams and Docklands Light Railway, as well as buses and the Tube. ------------------------------------------------------------ Following this first phase of the rollout, different ticket types will be introduced onto the Oyster card progressively, starting initially with monthly and annual season tickets. ------------------------------------------------------------ Cubic Transportation Systems is the world’s largest provider of integrated electronic ticketing systems and has smart card contracts for public transit systems in North America, Europe and Asia. ------------------------------------------------------------ Every year, nearly 10 billion people use Cubic systems in more than 40 major markets in cities on five continents. In addition to London, Washington, D.C., Hong Kong, Chicago, New York, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Atlanta, San Francisco, Singapore and Miami also rely on Cubic’s public transit fare collection technology. ------------------------------------------------------------ The corporation’s other major segment, Cubic Defense Applications, provides instrumented air and ground combat training systems, battle command training, simulations and simulation support for U. S. and allied military forces. The group also produces high technology avionics, data links and communications products for government and commercial customers, and a wide range of technical and logistics services. Acquires Media Integration BV ------------------------------------------------------------ Friday, November 27, 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------ (Omaha, Neb.-November 27, 1998) - Transaction Systems Architects, Inc. (Nasdaq: TSAI) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Media Integration BV (MINT), a privately held corporation headquartered in Gouda, The Netherlands pursuant to a plan of share exchange. Under the terms of the exchange, Transaction Systems will acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of MINT in exchange for 740,000 shares of Transaction Systems' Class A Common Stock. The transaction is intended to be accounted for as a pooling of interests. ------------------------------------------------------------ MINT is a market leader in the provision of multifunctional smart card systems for banks, telcos, insurance, travel industries and governmental organizations. ------------------------------------------------------------ As a smart card software specialist and systems integrators, MINT's MONAD products provide multifunctional card infrastructure, an application development platform and front/back office integration. MINT holds a prominent position in the smart card industry, through their association with the national Chipcard Platform Foundation and the multifunctional card infrastructure for CHIPPER and Proton. ------------------------------------------------------------ "We are excited with the acquisition of MINT as they have proven products and a solid track record with the major smart card issuers in The Netherlands, Australia and innovators in other countries around the world," said Mark R. Vipond , senior vice president of Transaction Systems Architects. ------------------------------------------------------------ "We look forward to becoming a significant addition to TSA's smart card division. Our plan is to leverage TSA's world wide distribution channel and continue our product development of multifunctional applications for smart cards," said Dr. Rainier J. W. Brueren, managing director, MINT (www.MINT.nl). ----------------------------------------------------------- Transaction Systems Architects' software facilitates electronic payments by providing consumers and companies access to their money. Its products are used to process transactions involving wire transfers, credit cards, debit cards, smart cards, home banking services, checks, as well as automated clearing and settlement. Transaction Systems' solutions are used on more than 3,000 product systems in 70 countries on six continents. ------------------------------------------------------- Its not the card or the company that is important in the end---it is the gizmos inside it that are interoperable with each other and the applications it contains---any company can own the card---we are talking the recurring revenues that come from the technology inside the card and with each swipe or in the case of contactless---Hong Kong wave--that each company that has the technology inside the card gets in commission from the use of that card. All cards as you state need to be EMV compliant by 2005--so all have to have certain kinds of gizmos in them to make that idea work. -------------------------------------------------- There is not much point hopping of the train in London--then going to the post office to buy stamps and your Cubic Card doesn't work---you need to have something in it from Proton---in order to buy the stamps---you need to have a banking and finance application--it is a win win situation for all---I would think naturally ERG probably would like to have the whole thing--who wouldn't---howvever---your still getting the moola from the licensing of your technology. P Fog states---ERG would like to go for many contracts--some like Chicago they could have had if they wanted it--they had to decide against it--for it would have strained financial resources just too much and would have been too hard to do in the time period the customer wanted--whats that tell you about the U.S.---they are certainly moving to get smartcards into their transit systems--whether that be New York---or Freo. ------------------------------------------------------- You know---Cubic have Singapore---so do ERG what does that tell you? ------------------------------------------------------- the laws of non disclosure and confidentiality---many times with a contract the customer has to announce first---then only after they have announced it and permission is given can the other partie then say they have got it. ------------------------------------------------------- http://www.protonworld.com/press/pr/PR_2000-05-03_ACI.pdf --------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.protonworld.com/press/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Proton World and ACI have co-operated at a technical level for many years and have many joint customers who, between them, have deployed millions of smart cards," said GraemeWard, Chief Technology Officer of ACI Worldwide’s Electronic Commerce business unit. "As this industry gains pace and issuers see the benefits of including many applications on a single card, as well as complying with international standards for interoperability, our combined product offering and experience will reduce risk and improve effective time to market. This will provide issuers and application providers with a single-source approach to deploying the technology and integration with acquiring and back-office systems. I believe that the ability of a customer to provide unique identity - in order to brand the products and services as they want, deliver them in the way that they want - by means of a multiple-application smart card - will be the next great step in the evolution of customer-centric technology. I am delighted that we will be working with Proton World to make this vision a reality." ------------------------------------------------------------ http://llrules.homestead.com/files/Here_Comes_The_Sun.wav ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.tsainc.com/news/newsdetail.asp?news_id=325 ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.protonworld.com/press/pr/PR_2000-05-03_ACI.pdf ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.protonworld.com/press/ ------------------------------------------------------------ "Proton World and ACI have co-operated at a technical level for many years and have many joint customers who, between them, have deployed millions of smart cards," ------------------------------------------------------------ http://hayjd04.tripod.com/MusicLibrary/Manchester/MelissaManchesterDannysSong.wav ------------------------------------------------------------ ACI Worldwide and JCB International Work To Promote Smart Card Adoption ------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday, October 29, 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------ ACI Includes J/Smart Switching Capabilities in New Release of BASE24 ------------------------------------------------------------ (OMAHA, Neb. — October 29, 2002) — ACI Worldwide (Nasdaq: TSAIE), a leading international provider of enterprise e-payment solutions, and JCB International Co. We know Octopus processes 6.5 million contacts a day. x by week x 52 = 2 billion 366 million people in Hong Kong alone. It is a lot harder to find how many scards they have issued. Under 10 million imo. ------------------------------------------------------------ Every year, nearly 10 billion people use Cubic systems in more than 40 major markets in cities on five continents. Transit has a long way to go yet but it is clear that greater deployment will occur online. Frost and Sullivan. The integration of smart card readers into PCs will also boost deployment levels, as will falling hardware costs." ----------------------------------------------------------- “While smart card costs have been declining”, Ubhey confirms, “the expenses accrued in distributing the cards to the target base has been substantial”. Furthermore, “enormous outlays are required to upgrade terminals to smart card-ready ones” and this is “a significant restraint to growth”, Ubhey says. As businesses turn to commerce via Internet, intranet and VPNs, however, F&S expects the rise of network security applications to drive demand for readers. ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.stockhouse.com.au/bullboards/viewmessage.asp?no=5714710 ------------------------------------------------------------ walt12 (ID#: 108490) RE: With smartcards in general 1999---02/03 16/11/02 12:17:52 PM 5714710 ----------------------------------------------------------- Pourquoi I wouldn't assume conservatism retarded scard acceptance. In the early 90's scards were not as sophisticated as they are today. Protons first scard took almost 5 seconds to retrieve data. Proton's platform was devised and implemented by Banksys, Visa etc.It served its purpose for the 500 odd banks. But the problem was commercialising scards for mass consumer acceptance. The costs to update ATM's was far higher than it is today. The banks would not issue scards until they could see a sound business case to do so. It simply was too costly for the meagre returns.Whilst they agreed that scards were inevitable the costs were prohibitive. The magnetic stripe whilst insecure was serving its purpose. Since then the costs of scards fell from $8 to $2-$3. The ATM's and AFC's likewise fell. The margins are so tight now that players such as Motorola sold its scard mnufacturing business years ago. They saw the writing on the wall. Companies such as Cubic that develops such hardware(AFC's) has had to revise profits down. They recognised that the major revenues would be gained providing software. Now banks globally recognise scards have commercial appeal. They have seen fraudulent conversion (mag stripe) jump to record highs as the have seen prices fall for rollouts. Plus they have security issues to deal with Sept 11th. The whole scene has changed in two short years. ERG's strategy was obvious. Focus on transit, gain critical mass and inevitbly capitalise on applications outside transit. OK the Daq boom and bust hurt investers such as myself but ERG gained hundreds of millions that financed R&D. That propelled ERG to be recognised as a global leader. Now we want to see profits. We will see the same irrational exuberance surface again, industry specific. Blue sky buyers will return, they always do.Just a matter of time. ------------------------------------------------------------ [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
