First leading card manufacturer gives support to Proton World's new generation smart card multiple-application management system. Brussels, Paris and Ghent, 12 September 2000 - Oberthur Card Systems, a global leader and innovator in the smart card industry, today endorsed the Card and Application Life Cycle (CALC) specifications designed by Proton World, a world leader in the development of smart card solutions, as part of its new generation R4 technology. The success of true multi-application cards lies in the effectiveness of the specifications for their card management software, which secures and maintains the lifecycle and functionality of the applications on the card. Oberthur will offer JavaTM-based card solutions which incorporate Proton World's CALC specifications. CALC is Proton World's implementation of the Open Platform specifications, which further emphasises the importance of open environments for multi-application cards and card management systems. Oberthur intends to integrate the CALC specifications in its JavaTM-based multi -application platforms, and also in its range of personalisation and Card Management Services, providing end-to-end CALC-compliant solutions. Didier Sérodon, Payment Business Unit Director for Oberthur Card Systems, said: "Oberthur has long been committed to the development of open standards and the promotion of interoperability, because it recognises that this is vital to the future of the smart card industry. We fully support the organisations that are working towards making interoperability a reality and accordingly we are delighted to endorse Proton World's CALC specifications. We are continuously seeking ways to advance our Java CardTM solutions, which already conform to the Open Platform requirements, and now will support CALC." Dr Armand Linkens, Managing Director and CEO of Proton World, said "I am delighted to welcome Oberthur as the first card manufacturer to endorse CALC, which is a key part of our new generation R4 technology. We have enjoyed working with Oberthur in the past and welcome their innovative approach and their determination, like Proton World, to remain at the cutting edge of smart card technology developments." Notes for Editors Oberthur Card Systems(Paris Stock Exchange - Code SICOVAM 12413), a global leader and innovator in the smart card industry, is shaping the future through offering the ultimate in SIM, WAP, UMTS, e-wallet technologies & card management systems coupled with a firm commitment to open standards. The world's N0 1 supplier of MasterCard and Visa cards, N0 1 in banking, e-commerce, m-commerce and pay-TV, Oberthur is also the N0 1 in JavaTM and GSM technologies. Employing 3,000 people worldwide, Oberthur Card Systems has an international reach ensured by 30 sales offices and 13 manufacturing sites across the five continents. Oberthur Card Systems had sales of 185.8 million Euros in 1999. GIESECKE & DEVRIENT CERTIFIED AS PROTON CARD SUPPLIER Proton issuers now able to choose G&D's new generation range of smart cards Brussels, Belgium / Munich, Germany - February 3, 1999 - Giesecke & Devrient GmbH (G&D), Munich, the leading international cards and security company, and Proton World, the high-technology company which delivers global smart card solutions world-wide, have announced today the official release of the latest generation of Proton cards. Carrying a chip mask developed in close collaboration with G&D, the new generation cards support multi-functionality. Proton World has committed itself to multiple sources to guarantee utmost security and convenience in the supply chain. G&D's entry into the chip mask development of Proton is emphatic proof of this commitment. The G&D card product family will be fully compliant with the Proton R3 specification, including a secure base for the whole range of applications supported by Proton. In addition to the electronic purse, which can be used to make small purchases at accepting merchant locations, the chip can hold a variety of other applications, including loyalty programmes, mass transit, multiple currency electronic purses, electronic ticketing, telephone services, security access and secure payments on the Internet. The strict certification requirements of Proton World and the security expertise of G&D have led to a range of products which complies with all current requirements for smart card security, including the recommendations formulated by major payment organisations last year on software and chip redesign. These features include an enhanced DES algorithm, prevention software and an enhanced chip platform. Jürgen Nehls, member of the G&D Management Board and Head of the Cards and Card Systems Division, added: "Strategically, Proton fits perfectly into our core business and adds substantially to Giesecke & Devrient's strong focus on microprocessor card products. The world-wide objectives of Proton World, and Giesecke & Devrient's position as a global security and technology leader in smart cards match very well.

We will use our core competencies in Banking, Telecommunications, Mass Transit, Identification, Healthcare and Multi-media to actively support the future of this very promising technology." Dieter Bulle, Executive Vice President of Payment and Multi-media at G&D, explained that: "The G&D R3 Proton mask will allow any Proton card-issuer to run his individual application in a secure and easy way because of the available space in the EEPROM combined with the availability of additional security keys to safeguard each application. The mask supports ISO 7816 and specific Eurocard/MasterCard/Visa (EMV) commands. The involvement of G&D in developments such as JAVA, MULTOS, Public Key Systems, EMV-compliant debit/credit schemes, CEPS (Common Electronic Purse Specification) and contactless technology makes G&D the technology expert for partners of Proton World. G&D will be able to support any of PW's selected applications in addition to the electronic purse". Armand Linkens, Managing Director of Proton World said: "Our strategy is to work with world-class partners to develop Proton technology to answer the needs of card issuers. Our technology is independent of operating systems, cards and terminals. We welcome Giesecke & Devrient as partners in achieving our strategy to the benefit of all parties involved." Yves Moulart, Executive Vice-President, Research & Development at Proton World said: " We have appreciated the professionalism of Giesecke & Devrient during the completion of this development, which offers even more flexibility to our licensees". Technical NoteThe G&D Proton implementation is fully compliant with the R3 specification of Proton World. In addition, it offers a maximum of 1185 bytes of free EEPROM memory for additional multi-functional applications. The supplementary keys allow the creation of additional files for applications such as loyalty, phone book, access control etc. in a secure and easy way. The R3 command sets comply fully with ISO 7816 to include backward compatibility, Visa Easy Entry, access rights for additional files, a defined number of PIN trials, an additional set of keys/PINs, ticket length modification and multi currency purses. The file structure allows separate access conditions for different applications. The data integrity is ensured by the operating system and, to avoid the negative impact of power interruptions on the integrity of data in the smart card, the G&D implementation uses a "Safe Write" principal. G&D has chosen the Siemens SLE 44C24S chip platform to offer the maximum in security and customer convenience. This latest product of the 44-Siemens smart card family uses enhanced functionality, extended security features and extended RAM and ROM memory space. The SLE 44C24S is an 8-bit security controller with 26-Kbyte ROM, 256-byte RAM, 512-byte XRAM and 2-Kbyte EEPROM. http://www.protonworld.comProton Prisma Proton Prisma is the new generation of smart card products from Proton World that builds on our successes and offers the functionalities required by smart card issuers now and in the future.
