I was cleaning the bathroom and ran out of water. The pump isn't pumping any water. The breaker has not blown and there is power. There is 0 psi in the tank. Pump is 2 years old. Water has been clear with no smell or dirt. What is going on? Any help would be appreciated.

I have an 85 foot deep well. It has an above-ground jet pump. Lately, when using a lot of water - say to fill 4 5-gal buckets, or taking a shower, the flow will stop, and after about 5-10 seconds, the pump will kick in (I can hear it) and we have full pressure immediately. There is a relatively new bladder-type pressure tank. What is wrong?

I live in Florida and have an old well that I use for yard irrigation only. Recently I accidently ran over my well PVC pipes. The pipe comes out of the ground and goes through a check valve and immediately returns to the ground and then to my pump. The pipes stayed broken for about 3 weeks. I replaced the piping but reused the check valve. I am not sure what the check valve is for but would imagine it is to prevent back flow. I turned the pump on and let it run for about 30 minutes but could not get any water pressure to my holding tank. I was afraid to run much longer because I was not sure that it would not damage the pump. What do you think? Does it take longer to create the suction (prime). It is about 75 feet from the pipes to the pump. The well is probably about 100 feet deep. Thanks for your help.

Our neighbors had a new well dug. From the day they started drilling we haven't had water and nor have other surrounding neighbors. They've been done drilling for 2 days now and we still don't have water. What happened?

I am considering installing my RO system to my 3/4" well water line before the the house filter and holding tank. Is this OK? The reason being is the pressure after the tank fluctuates between 20-50 psi when we are using non drinking water and the pressure before the tank and filter remains constant The RO sytem wastes alot of water to get the final product to the RO holding tank so it takes alot of time to fill it. I figured the installing the RO system this way would save time filling the RO holding tank. Am I on the right track. We are only going to use the RO for drinking water and ice for the fridge.

I just installed a convertible pump to replace my shallow well pump. My father in law told me to not install the ejector on to the pump, but rather plug the bottom hole and just use the one inlet to the pump. It does pump but, I do not have a lot of pressure, I think it is because of the ejector not being there causing it. Can somewhere verify whether or not you have to install the ejector on the convertible pumps or can you just plug the second hole.

We have a geothermal heat pump that runs off well water. Everything was working fine, but then it got cold and our water flow went from the needed 10 gal/min to 3 gpm.

We had the heat pump serviceman come out and he said the problem was that there needs to be at least 7 gpm running through the water lines for the heat pump to work properly so the well pump must have quit working. We had the well pump serviceman look at the well pump and he said the pump's working fine, there's water running through it, no air in the line, but that the line must be frozen and that's what causing the low flow.

We hung a heat light in the well, and it's been in the 60's the past 3 days, but the water flow is still way down.

We've been told the problem is NOT the well pump and NOT the heat pump, but no one can tell us what IS the problem!

How do we find out where the problem is, what the problem is, and then what can we do to fix it? Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions?

At Thanksgiving time we had to replace the fittings at the bottome of our well. They also put a new tank in. I dont know exaclty what it is called. We had no water pressure in the house. Now our well pump runs all the time. You can hear the water running constantly. Im sure this is not a good sign. Any suggestions? Also where would I purchase a new pump? And what would I need to know how to install it myself?

I recently had a well drilled on my property. The first attempt the driller said he ran into a sand cavern and had to abandon that sight. It is 17' to the top of the cavern and 19' to the top of the water. There is 2 1/2' of water. Under that it is just like quick sand. Would this well be any good to use for watering livestock or maybe irrigation. If it is any good for anything how far down does the pipe need to go? I know very little about wells.

Just had a new well dug to 40 Feet. Pure Sand and pumping about 14 Gal per minute. Well was working ok until we starting having a bad smell. We were told to flush more Bleech down the Steel 6" Well casing we have as there may be some bacteria in it. When we took the top of the Well Casing off, we noticed that the inside of the well casing is now very pitted with rust pockets, and there were many little droplets of water on them. We are assuming the well casing is rusting for some reason and all the iron is going into our water. Is this the fault of the Well driller and cheap pipe, or is it something to do with our water? We put in some shock treatment and washed the inside of the pipe the best we could - but not sure where to go from here??

Thanks!

We just replaced our old well pump with a Wayne 3/4 HP deep well subermersible pump because our old Red Jacket quit working. We replaced the pressure switch and the piping all the way from top to bottom as well. Now, we are getting pressure, but as soon as we turn the water on the pressure stops and we have no water. The pump quits and about 5 minutes later, kicks back on and does the same thing over and over. If anyone knows what the problem is or what we need to do to fix it please let me know..... no water for over a week!

Thanks.

Hi, I used our water yesterday, no problem, water clear. Middle of the night, no water. If the well ran dry wouldn't it of come up muddy or dirty being we are pulling water from the bottom of the well? How can one tell if it has run dry. Husband is pulling those hoses out of the well to see what is going on if it is wet or just muddy. Can the problem be with the pump impeller?? If there is something wrong with the impeller, would it stop drawing water?? The pump is running and there is 70 pds of pressure in the air tank. So if someone can tell me asap how to tell if it is the tank, pump or the well?? Thanks Lynda

Hello. I am hoping someone can help me figure out if my well can be made usable. It was working fine 2 summers ago, but hasn't been used since.

It is a deep well irrigation set up. There are 2 pipes coming out of a slab of concrete. One looks to be 1 1/4 inch and connects to the top hole of a two stage jet pump (I think that's what they are called). The other pipe looks like a one inch pipe and connects to the bottom hole on the pump. I cannot get this well to prime no matter what I try. (I have been able to in past years, though it was never easy.)

I assume there is a check valve somewhere down in the well. How can I check to see if it is holding? If I fill the top pipe with water, should it stay filled?

Truthfully, I'm not positive that my pump is good. It runs, but it could also have problems. How can I test my pump to make sure it isn't the problem?

I would appreciate any help. I'd really like to get this working and avoid having a new well drilled.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Vic

Recently I have noticed that my pump would not stop running although I had the normal 50 PSI pressure in the tank. When I shut off the cutoff/pressure switch and then turned it back on the pump did not come on until a demand was put on the system. Then again it would not turn off. I thought that the cutoff/pressure switch was defective, but local (experts) said it was that the tank was waterlogged. I was told to shut off the pump and drain the pressure tank until the water stopped coming out. I did this and now the pressure in the tank will not get above 40 PSI so naturally the pump will not stop running and when I manually shut it off at the cutoff/pressure switch it starts running without a demand being put on it. The pressure tank is a non bladder type and there are no visible leaks. I still seem to have plenty of water and ok pressure. Any ideas what could be wrong now?

Just had a new well drilled at the hunting camp at 104' with return of salt water under pressure (presumed artesian). I'm having the water tested chemically.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the easiest/cheapest way to make this water drinkable? (this is a camp) or at least suitable for household use?

Also, I'm assuming PVC pipe is okay, what about metal valve's, etc? which metal is best?

Thanks for having this forum available, it's very helpful!

After running till clear it will not pick up prime. How many gallons equal a foot of water? Does this seem to mean well is out? We can hear the pump but it isn't building any pressure.

We built a new home and were suppose to move into it in a couple of weeks. We had a well drilled two months ago, and was hooked up to the house about two weeks ago. The water was dirty for a day or so but cleared up. I drawed it down a couple of times a day, slowly, as I was told by the well guy, this would develope the well. Other than filling a few 5 gallon buckets a day for construction use, we haven't used the well. Up to this point the water has been clear but smelled like well water. So we were told to put chlorine tablets in the well. We did this yesterday and ran the water until we could smell the chlorine, let it sat until the next day. Turned on water and it was clear for a minute and then it turned brown!!! Now for some reason after running it for a while to see if would clear up the pump wont even turn on when holding in the contactor on the presure tank. It seemed to have trouble building up pressure. Possibly something is clogged up?
The well is 85' deep, has 4" pvc screen, a Franklin 3/4 hp pump that is 75' deep, I think and the presure tank has 28psi when empty, and has a 30/50psi switch. ANY suggestion as to where to start would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance, Steve.

I have a 5" PVC deepwell with submersible pump. My pressure and storage tank are in a crawlspace under the cottage. The main line from the well exits from a pitless adapter below the frost line then slowly slopes up to ground level where the storage tank is. What's the best way to get the water out of the main line to avoid freezing this winter. The static level of the well seems to be above the pitless adapter. I've opened the boiler drain at the base of the pressure tank and opened all the faucets in the house until no more drains. I'm thinking there must be some valve or something between the storage tank and the well to prevent siphoning from the house into the well, maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks for any helpful thoughts.

Would one of those Hydra portable well drilling rigs be able to drill this? Would like to hear from someone that has actually used one of these rigs to drill a well. Also, another option would be a hand dug well, anyone know how that is done?

I have an "old" 2 inch driven well with the Packer-type Jet Pump. The well drillers certificate shows drilling to 80' but I don't know how far the pipe goes. Every Summer for the past 6 years I run out of water. The well people that have come out do not want to pull out the old piping because, they say, they're afraid it will break. One of my neighbors had his Jet pump pipes removed and a 2" submersible installed. Your site has a description of the packer type system being tightly installed against the wall of the main 2" pipe; is this why the well companies don't want to try to remove it or do they want to sell me a new well, (which they do try), except I can't afford a new well. Help!

Hello: My water table has dropped considerably low to near a point of drying up in my 3 ft. dug well that is 20 ft. deep. I was considering augering down 5-6 ft more and installing 8" clay pipe and putting sand or stone in the dropping a sand point in the pipe and topping off the pipe with course sand. Could anyone tell me is this the right procedure for converting dug-driven. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated

Looking for suggestions as to how to approach bringing water (back) to my land.

Some background:
- just bought the place. Don't know everything yet.
- property is off the power grid (by miles). We'll be using Solar/Generator for power.
- nearest water source is a river about 3 miles away
- 5" well shaft is 100' feet deep. Previous owner says he saw a break in the middle (at 50') with a camera but was still able to pump 5GPM at the 50-foot level.
- water was tested in March 2003 and is potable. The fact that it was tested in March leads me to believe the 5GPM was measured in March, too. No idea what the water availability would be in August.
- well was drilled in 1982. Not sure it's been used much at all in last 10 years (cabin on property burned down in 1999).

We're going to use this property as a vacation campground for time being. We'll build on it later when we've saved enough. In the meantime, it would be great to have water for drinking and for drowning campfires.

Some questions:
1) How does one find a camera that can be lowered into a well so I can see the "break" myself?
2) Best pump to use (if re-drilling is unnecessary)? Do they make thin ones that I can sneak past a break in the liner?
3) Likelihood this well is salvageable (best guesses would be great here)?

Any comments welcome. I'm a complete noob to well maintenance. Thanks for reading.

Hello,

I have driven a 2" point down to 47 feet. I have 7 1/2' of water in the pipe, and the top of the pipe is a little more than 3' below ground level.
I plan to put my 1 1/4 drop pipe down 45'.

I have a 3/4 hp convertible jet pump. I am getting ready to run my pressure and suction lines out to the well.

My question is, what size lines would you recommend? I was thinking 1" and 3/4". But I haven't found anything where there is a recommendation. I lucked upon thi site, and you all seem to know a great deal about all types of wells. Any help would be appreciated.

It is in Northern Wisconsin if that helps.

Thank you.

Hello, we have an artesian well that has been working for 20+ years. It's around 110' and it's a 2" schedule 80 galvanized pipe. It stopped flowing and we just bailed it/blew it out with compressed air (I guess the strainer was full of sediment), anyway it started to work (flow) again. The well is at a remote camp, with no electricity. The pressure from the well routinely delivers a full half-inch pipe of water about 2' above the ground--any higher and the water stops (this is the normal flow--same as always).

Sorry this is so long, but now for the question: does anyone have any idea as to how we might get the water up 10-12 more feet. We'd like to fill an elevated tank to provide "running" water for the camp.

Folks have suggested:
1) adding a hand/pressure pump, but those are really expensive
2)adding another section of pipe and a pitcher pump up 10' in the air with a linkage to the top pump handle
3) using a hydraulic/ram pump (there is approximately 15' of drop-off below the well)
4) and finally, using a drop pipe with some sort of expansions seal at the bottom, thinking that the column of water would be lighter--but then the surface area would be smaller too...

Finally, and thanks for reading this far, some people (old-timers) say that the well should be left open/flowing (not sure why), any advice about this??

I sincerely appreciate your time and imput..

I have a 15 foot driven well. Pump is a jet. It delivers enough water, but it won't put out more than 24 PSI. I had been getting a lot of sand. Tank is a bladder at 18 PSI. It moves about 1-2 GPM and sometimes slows to 1/2-1/4 GPM. Tried another pump with the same results. No air leaks, and it primes readily. Where do I look

Does anyone know what the correct PSI should be for the sandpoint type well. I have a newer Wayne 1/2 hp pump sitting on the pressure tank. When it kicks off, I show 32psi and can hear a slight air leaking sound around the middle ofthe tank area. I can see the pressure go down over a 5-8 minute period and the pump will kick back on and run until its at 32psi again. Im not sure where to look for the leak?, and what should the proper PSI be? Any help will be appreciated. You can email me as well.

I am in need of some advice that I can depend on. I am in process of hand drilling a well and I presently have a hole 120 foot deep (it is 3" in diameter) and I have a two inch pvc pipe down to 104 foot, but am planning to go on down to 120 foot with it. I prsently have water that comes up to the 92 foot level in the pipe. I am planning to use a jet pump system in the two inch pipe. My question is how do I make sure this system will lift the water from that deep? an old water well man told me to check it out as he didn't think the pumps would lift the water that high, He is one of those that has put in many wells by hand ( all 2" wells ) but they have all been shallow wells ( 50 foot or less ) I am planning to use a 1" pvc pipe down to the injector and on down to the foot valve. I need to know for sure about the pump and jet system before I go but them. I would hate to but them and find out they don't work for the lift I need. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated. I am in the process of developing two 1 1/4" wells and I have gotten a hold of an old pitcher pump. It is in good condition just needed cleaning up and new leathers. I also honed out the cylinder with a clyinder stone.

However I am having a problem finding the correct leather flapper. We found one but when we called the company (Simmons) to confirm the size they told me it would be a 4" diameter flapper. This did not work at all.

Now this is only a 2x pitcher pump and the old flapper leather is 3 1/8". The cylinder itself is only 3". Do you know of the correct size and where to get one? Or do you know a company that is more knowlegeable to help with sizing this?

Thanks,

I have gotten stuck using the Brady method. I have read the previous posts from other folks and what they did to fix it but mine is a little different.

I live in central Florida where the water table is normally about 6', however I live on a small hill. I followed the directions meticulously. I was able to go down 11' with the 2" coupler on the Brady T pack. When I hit a hard spot. I switched to the 3/4" setup still using two hoses.

It then took me quite a while but I got it going again. Encountered a lot of clay and sand and silt. Got to about 13' and got stuck again. Pulled out the 3/4" pipe and the teeth were worn down badly. Cut off the end and cut new teeth in the pipe. This helped and started going down again. Started the next morning and was able to get down to about 15' 8" then I got really stuck.

Now something strange happened. The 3/4' pipe was able to wash down kind of easy, in fact it would go down way past the 2" pipe. Remembering what you said I would pull up on the 3/4" pipe to keep it fairly even with the 2" casing. But the well would take all of the water I could give it even to the point of sucking it down. And I could not get the 2" casing to go down at all now. It is really not progressing. It was so bad that I decided to pull up the casing and see if the teeth on it were worn down or rolled in. But the 2" casing was only worn down some and one tooth was slightly rolled in maybe 1 mm. I put the casing back in and do not know what to do now.

Does anyone have any ideas. It is taking all the water I can give it and when I put the string down there there is hardly any water in the bottom. When material comes up it is fine sand and white specks like maybe limestone bits.

Also I noticed that turning it with the pipe wrench takes a huge amount of effort. Should it be this hard or is there a problem with how I am doing it?

Thanks,

Jerry

It's about three feet in diameter and who knows how deep. I'm wondering what I can/should do with it.

Obviously I need to make it safe in some way. Who is responsible for making it safe? We did not know about it when we bought the house, so is the title company responsible for filling it, or making it safe otherwise?

Thanks in advance for any help you all can offer.

When my centrifugal pump (fed by atmospheric storage tank, flooded prime)starts it clatters - what I mean is it makes two split second attempts to start and on the third it runs. This started all of a sudden. The pressure tank has a bladder and is properly charged. I know this is not good for my pump what can I do?

This is the first year I'm not planning to run a propane heater in the basement as it hasn't been cost efficient. I may simply run a space heater the very coldest nights. Living in the Northeast, I know I have to insulate the pipes and my storage tank and water heater. We needed the second storage tank because we kept burning out water heaters as the water from our 607 ft well was too cold. When I had to have it pulled a few years ago the plumber was skeptical, but after running the piping as far as 2 neighbors down the road and back, he agreed that we were indeed right about the depth. I see that the pressure tank sweats a lot, so regular insulation probably wouldn't work well. What is the proper way to insulate this tank? And, do I have to insulate the intake pipes additionally? The well is only about 3 ft from the house.

Our water pressure into the house was acting up since last year. The water pressure significantly decreased. It was finally decided that the sandpoint was plugged. So, instead of hiring a professional, my husband, along with some help, decided to try to unplug it. One thing they tried was shooting a gun down into the pipe to try to loosen it up. Of course, it didn't work but I wanted to know how safe this is for the well and for us to do this. As well as, WHY anyone would choose to do this and how it would work IF it worked?

Last night we replaced my sandpoint and pump (everything is in the basement of our house). Our water here seems to have a very high mineral/iron content and on a regular basis the screen of the sandpoint clogs to a point that if you are not careful the point will burn itself out.

Last night we started by using a post hole auger and went down 4 1/2'-5' under the basement floor, the sand was very wet and the hole began filling with water immediately.

We put a used 36" sandpoint (that had been cleaned with rust remover) on a 6' length of 1 1/4" galvanized pipe and "jacked it down". We were able to connect a second 6' length of pipe and managed to "jack it down" about 4' by my calculations this should give me close to 9' of water in the pipe. As hard as we tried we could not get any further into the ground, I swear at one point I saw the floor joists move we were jacking so hard.

Once we got the pipe in place we hooked up a new 1/2 hp convertible jet pump, primed the system and fired it up. After a few attempts at getting the pump primed we finally managed to get pulling water. The pressure built up to 40 PSI (according the gauge) then the pump kicked out and the pressure gauge dropped to 20 PSI.

I have a 33 gallon bladder tank, so I ran out the water to see how much we could draw down befor the pump kicked in. After drawing off 5 gallons the pump kicked in and pressure built up to 40 PSI and the pump kicked off only to start again immediately, it ran up to 40 PSI kicked off and dropped to 20 PSI and sat there. I ran a couple of more cycles but the same thing kept happening. By now it was after mid-night so we decided good enough for now and called it a night.

Just before going to the bed, normal household useage had drawn down the reserve to make the pump kick in. This time it kicked in and out in and out constantly. I was worried we were going to burn it out so I've disconnected the power. I tried again this morning before leaving for work and same thing on and off on and off.

We replaced everything yesterday,pipes,check-valve,close nipples and taped all the joints, we made sure we tightened everything as tight as possible I am fairly confident there are no air leaks in the system. The only thing we didn't replace was the pre-charged pressure tank, though we did check to make sure there was air in the system. (I forgot to check the air pressure though).

So...now the question does anyone have any idea what possibly could be going on, I nearly at my wits end and you can be sure the wife is not too happy about the situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My problem is that I just replaced my pressure tank and now when the pressure gets down to the lower limit[40 psi]it trips the switch but the pump does'nt start for 5-10 seconds and in that amount of time the water pressure drops to zero. I checked the voltage on the line from the switch to the pump control and it was good. Then thinking that I had a problem with the pump control I replaced that too but the problem still persists. The only thing that I really changed was the size of the tank, I went from 30 to 44 gallons, same brand of tank just larger. The pressure switch is set at 40/60 and once the pump starts it pumps up and shuts off fine, its just when the pressure gets low enough that it trips the switch the pump lags and the pressure drops immediately. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Mr Dugan,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for your water well help line. 2 years ago (following your instructions) I drove a 2" stainless drive point 11 metres into the ground and have 1 metre of water at the bottom, I installed your inertia pump onto another stainless pipe running through the middle and made a crank shaft running off a motor to pull the pipe up and down. This has worked well and is still working - There does seem to be a fair bit of wear to the internal pipe and I'm not sure how long it will last. Because of this I have started to auger down to the water table (just over 10 metres down using a 6 " auger. I'm currently down 8.5 metres (not far from the table). My question is: If I place a 4" casing with a screen into my bore hole and get the casing down below the water table, can the casing serve as a screen as well? Will the bottom of the casing have to be sealed off with a cap or can I leave the bottom of the casing (which is also the screen) open. Should this not work, can I drive a 2" point through the 4" casing into the water table and use a different pumping system (than the inertia pump) to get the water up from inside the 2" casing? I've read that a packer pump will work, however you can't get these in Australia (where I live). I hope this all makes sense and you can give me some help by way of advice.

My sandpoint is down 13 ft., and it is sucking much air. Last year, it also brought up some air, but not like now. I have put a pipe down to the point and have water at about 11 ft. Should this point be deeper? Or is it possible that one of the joints is leaking air? It is a 2" point.
It provides enough water for showering and washing clothes, etc., but always provides some blast of air.

I need to choose a suction line size and have gotten terribly confused, hopefully either someone here can help me or direct me to someone who can. Specifics the suction line is 85 ft long with 10 ft of suction lift, the pump inlet and outlet are 1 1/2 inch diameter. The manual indicates that at that height and at 40 PSI the pump will pump 60 GPM, this figure seems unrealistic to me. Can anyone help me?

I just replaced a couple of mobile home faucets. I turned the pump off at the breaker and did the work. Now, I cannot get continuous flow. At most, you could lather up in the shower, but you would be left with soap in your eyes because the water shuts off like closing a valve. There seems to be no correlation between time and flow. I have water standing outside which is not normal, but of course I had 4 inches of rain on Friday. Do I have a leak? Have I lost the prime, or what? I believe it is a submersible pump.

While excavating some of my property I hit rock (not gravel) at about 15'. I tried to get through it with the excavator but only managed another 2'. I noticed the rock was very wet and within a couple hours I had a steady stream of water coming out, small but steady. After a day I have about 3' of water in a rather large hole. This may be a blessing or not, as my well recently went from producing 24 GPM to 4 GPM. I put in a 3000 gal storage tank to enable me to continue some watering of my lawn but my question now is how can cover this hole but still retrieve the water? I only dug it to bury a few stumps and do not want a big hole in the back yard. If I could bore into the rock I would install a pipe before I cover it but none of the methods here seem to really address getting through rock. Thank you

I have 2 wonderful new sand point, shallow, wells in this this summer. The cast iron pumps are working excellently.

Is there any issue with these pumps cracking if a hard freeze comes while they still hold their prime ? I recall no winter problems from the outside well I had 30 years ago, and in fact, I sometimes needed to thaw it and pump drinking water in the deep winter.

However, I can't understand how a risk of cracking would not be an issue ?

Kent
