Thank you, Matthew, for your searing account of male chauvinism in the Middle Ages. I am not replying to grant your request for more examples of female role models in Medieval history. However, I am offering a rebuttal to your statement that females are not interested in Medieval history because of feminist tirades against the patriarchal value system of that time. I think it is a weak argument at best, considering that many fields of study have skewed gender representation. For example, females greatly outnumber males in psychology programs across the country, from bachelor's degrees up to the doctoral level. Are we to believe, then, that only females are concerned with the functions of the brain and the nuances of the socialization process? Certainly not. As it pertains to history, I, as a female history major, recognize the inequality and injustice of Medieval times; therefore, a few examples of women who have made remarkable achievements in no way contends with the overall focus on the thoughts and themes of male dominance and achievement in practically all historical eras. Your request for historical female role models seems to me to be merely a way to pacify feminists who correctly identify the injustices of female omission from the annals of history. Good luck, Matthew, because there aren't enough documented examples of the outstanding achievements of women to satisfy those of us who advocate equality of the sexes, BECAUSE OF the patriachal value system that has dictated history and still dominates the world today.
