Eep. My. I think I may have been a little misunderstood, and allow me the futile chance to try and cover myself. :P I did not mean to imply that all women were disinterested in Medieval history because of the social injustice of the period, simply to offer a possibility for why -some- of them write it off as a time of rampant and unchecked chauvinism. Admittedly, I tend to be one who prefers to focus upon the outstanding women of the Middle Ages who did manage to greatly impact the world around them and 'break the mold' as it were, but that is due to something of an innate optimism I've always adopted in historical study.

Mind you, I am not making any claim that there was equality, in the Middle Ages or at any other epoch of Western development that I can recall, politically or otherwise, until the 21st Century, but I do think there is validity in the 'exceptions to the rule', in the women who did leave their mark upon history and our civilisation. I asked for exemplars of female power and influence in the Middle Ages because they do exist, however few of them in the multitude of men recorded in the annals of history, and I think they are noteworthy, and in some instances made greater contributions than their male counterparts.

There was a great injustice to women, both in the Middle Ages and throughout Western history (and Eastern, for that matter), but I don't think that inherrently discounts the value of those who did manage to rise above that, and in some ways lay precedent for the eventual recognition of male/female equality, which sadly took until the last century to come to fruition in the majority of Western societies.

Which reminds me of another example, and one of my personal favorites.
