Oh, almost forgot to mention. One other great book.

The Thief, the Cross and the Wheel: Pain and the Spectacle of Punishment in Medieval and Renaissance Europe

by Mitch Merback. He gives particular emphasis to the Christian/Western methods of torture, and draws some religious connotations stemming back to the crucifixion of Christ, as well. It's not a cheap book, though. I think I shelled out $30.00 for it, and that was at a local used bookseller that is famous for slashing its prices to meet the demands of penny-pinching college students. But if you can get a copy of it, it's another great resource.
