I agree with your connection between Goffman's theory and the interaction between performer and audience in live music. Goffman seemed to beleive that performers tend to preform in the way that their audiences expect them to. Do you think this is true of live concerts and shows? I think it is. Like you said, a concert is only as good as the audience. And it takes a talented musician and performer to engage the audience. In order to do so the performer must behave the way the audience expects, or the audience will feel they've been duped. If you go to a show expecting an energetic and lively performance and instead the musician just sits and plays slow songs- you're disappointed because the perfomer has strayed from his role. The interdependent nature of performer and audience can also be referred to in Goffman's theory of teams. The outcome of the show is dependent on each side of the stage fulfilling their roles as either engaging musician or engaged audience.
