Subject: Relationship between performer and audience

I was thinking about the question posed in class the other day about how could Goffman's theory be related to musicians and I was thinking about the interaction between the performer and the audience as one way that his theory could be apply. What makes a live performance great? Obviously if the music is great, but also the ability of the performer to make a connection with the audience, that creates an environment that legitimizes the performance. I know I have been to a few shows that the music was great, but the audience was not engaged in the performance and it just made the whole energy of the event change. In order for a performance to be convincing the audience has to participate in making it appear and feel legitimate. Without audience response the performer's show lacks one of the major aspects that make a live performance wonderful.
