I think the performance is good based on whether or not an audience can connect and really enjoy the music. I think it's also important for the audience to feel like the artist plays a variety of music on stage. Let's take the Dave Matthews Band for example. Part of the reason they are so popular is because they jam on stage and have lyrics that a lot of people can relate too. I also think the energy of the crowd and the venue has a lot to do whether or not the performance is good. Red Rocks, for example, is a great venue, because it provides amazing scenery, a good light show, and seats where everyone can see the show.
