I think you pose an interesting question. I do not think one can put a box around a specific state of being and call it a true self, because as you say, we are ever changing. Rather, I think my most real self is the part of me that interprets my environment and either actively chooses the "mask" I will wear or succumbs to the pressures of my situation and involuntarily dons a mask of its choosing (read: coordinates a behavior, or set of behaviors).

Is it fair to say that we all possess an executive behind the masks? This executive may change its way of doing business from time to time, but I cannot recall a time in my life where I did not possess this internal process of decision making.
