Subject: Fleury Will Play, May Be On The Block

Although his off-ice problems did not affect his on-ice performance last season, there were whispers that Saskatoon winger Theo Fleury might not be available to the Silos this season. Fleury had fallen off the wagon in his battle with substance abuse, which could have affected his playing status for the 2004 GWHL season.

Instead, GWHL Commissioner Stephen Holodinsky delivered some good news to Silos GM Ken McKenna on Saturday, stating that Fleury will be allowed to suit up for the upcoming season. McKenna was happy to hear the news, and hopes that the reprieve will help Fleury overcome his problems.

"Theo is still a great player," stated the GM, "but there is a point where a player's problems can affect not only his performance, but also team chemistry in the locker room. Hopefully Theo will see this second chance as an opportunity to get himself straightened out."

Less certain, however, is Fleury's future in Saskatoon. The GM indicated that a couple teams had expressed some interest in Fleury's services, but they were concerned about his status for the upcoming season. With that issue now out of the way, it could mean that the firey winger will be shipped to another team.

"Right now, I have no plans to move Theo," asserted McKenna. "We could certainly use his offense, as well as his leadership. We are rebuilding, though, so it might be a case of Theo wanting to play for a contending team."

In addition to Fleury, there has been talk that center Robert Lang and winger/center Todd Marchant have also been the object of some attention from other GWHL clubs.

"It would be tough to move all those players, since we'd like the team to be competitive," said McKenna. "Robert is under contract, of course, but Todd is a restricted free agent, so we'll have to see what happens during the free agency period. It would have to be a good return for those two guys if we ever did decide to move them, though, since they are both young enough to have a few more effective seasons in the GWHL."
