1. What I like about Kohlberg’s theory of moral development is that is has an extreme measure that includes personalities like Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King. What I disliked about the theory is that the theory does not base the stages on environment and upbringing like religion. Also, I believe that this theory can go below stage one, as far as understanding serial criminals, kidnappers, and some terrorists. I believe I am really in between stage 4 ½ Transitional stages and stage 5 Social contract stage. I do take a “to each his own” approach to life and that who am I to judge another’s actions and decisions. However, I also see things as what’s best for the community, regardless on if I agree with it or not, like capital punishment.
2. I am a fan of Erikson, so pretty much everything about his stages I love; however, I believe that Erikson’s theory can be more detailed and play more factors in the stages. Marcia does a great job expounding more on it, and I would also like to see if the present era of technology can influence the continuum. I believe that I have recently left the identity and identity confusion stage and into the imitation and isolation. My experience as an undergraduate has opened a lot of discoveries about myself, so now I transitioned in to the next stage where I am now married and have a few committed friends also.
3. Although Erikson is my favorite theorist of the two, Kohlberg’s theory of moral development is the most relevant to my career in counseling. Many counseling theories come from cognitive processes, and one of my favorite counseling approaches is Rational-Emotive Cognitive Therapy. The process correlates to Kohlberg’s stages of moral development. This approach is commonly used for prisoners in order to evaluate their actions and the rational or irrational reasoning behind the actions. However, Erikson’s theory of identity is not exempt from the counseling the process and can be best used as an indicator of where a client stands on the outlook of themselves.
