In September of 2009 I was able to work for a company that provides care to children with autism. At Transformations, I received the proper training to be a Behavior Technician and I provided therapeutic care to children with autism and other mental illnesses. While there I worked with two young boys who are 10 and 13 years old. Both of the boys have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). However, the boys’ levels of functionality vary. The 10 year old boy is mild functional and the 13 year old boy is highly functional.

The behavioral and social learning theories are used in teaching and providing care for these children. The children who are in the facility have behavioral problems, so the children are given a positive reinforcement immediately after completing their assignment or for having good behavior. However, when the child does not comply, complete their assignment or has bad behavior they are not rewarded and then are told why. Applied Behavioral Analysis is used as the intervention to teach these children. The children’s learning consist of Discrete Trial Training (DTT), Verbal Behavior Training (VB), Natural Environmental Training (NET), labeling, and identifying objects, events, classification, and actions. So there is not a differentiation in the treatment, parents of the children are asked to provide the same methods of therapy in their homes.

Although I worked with this company for a brief period of time I saw progress. The children’s behavior was not as severe as it was before and they were more attentive in their school work. These children have gained more knowledge and patience through their behavioral and social learning skills and training.
