Karen's defensive ability kinda depends on what she's defending against, I'd say. While fire might not block, say, Sorata's lightning or Fuuma's godlike telekinesis too well, it makes a very effective defense against ofuda, which are in the end scraps of paper, and around which, from what I've seen, a great deal of Subaru's powers are based. The ofuda are clearly not made invulnerable by just their magic charge; Arashi hacks and slices Hinoto's shikigami ofuda into bits.
As for Subaru using Karen's flames against her because onmyoujitsu uses all elements, I'll have to strongly disagree--while Subaru can use fire on his own, Karen is the mistress of it, period. For example, when Subaru fights Nataku, he uses fire to try burn Nataku's scarf-things, with no particular success--they come out a bit scorched, but still serviceable. When Karen does the same, she FRIES them, and Nataku. Subaru is far more flexible, yes, and that is a great strength of his, but that also means that he won't match up to an elemental specialist when fighting solely in terms of that element, espescially if it comes down to a battle of willpower--Karen's an extremely strong person, after all. If it were Karen vs. Subaru in general, his greater flexibility might win the day, but if it were limited to fire, I don't believe for a second that he would be able to beat her.
As for the question the poster asked, I think all the DoH have their strengths--how much sense would it make, in a battle of the end times, for different people to so horribly outclass each other? Yuzuriha and Subaru are very flexible and adaptable, and the former has enthusiasm and determination to make up for her lack of the latter's experience. Karen and Aoki are both extremely adept and powerful with their elements of choice. Sorata's lightning would logically be really tricky to block, depending on who he's fighting. Really, if any of the DoH stood out to be as having a fairly minor, inflexible ability, it would be Arashi--but then, Arashi is extremely skilled and focused, and battles where she's massively outnumbered don't seem to faze her at all. Fighting Seishirou, Subaru's very useful because he knows the magic involved. Against, say, Satsuki, ofuda-based magic isn't particularly helpful. It all depends on the situation the characters are in, and who they're up against. That'd be my opinion, anyway.
