Hi Amy,
In my opinion, it is not a good idea for you to have him in your home. It's not your fault that his life has become unmanageable and his sickness can be passed onto other members of the family in terms of the lies, manipulation and complete insanity. I believe that for most people, unless they have been through some serious treatment - inpatient and some serious learning, they won't stay clean.
I don't believe that most people can actually "fix" or stop themselves - that is real addict thinking.
You do not owe nothing to him but prayers and well wishes. He could cause more harm than good in your family and it is definitely not fair to them to have to deal with the consequences of his selfishness. If he wasn't still selfish, he would not ask for you to put him up but he seems to only be worried about his own comfort and no one elses. If he was serious about cleaning up, he would do anything to get off the streets and go into a clean and sober or something. There are a lot of resources out there but in his mind, there are none that he would be comfortable and enabled in. Pray and I will pray for you, too.
God Be with you,
Hulalea
