The symptoms you describe are to do with sleep paralysis. Where the brain has not acknowledged sleep state and thus in effect whilst your physical body is at rest your brain is still under the impression that you are actully awake.

I too suffer from this and have since early childhood. It has become a rarity these days but still happens now and then.

It takes all my energy to just find some way of breaking out, once in this state. Usually, kicking my legs (takes a lot of effort) or calling out for my wife to shake me. Paramount is that I must wake up.

Worst part for me is that I cannot breath properly and panic will set in very quickly. It's the most horrible part of my life but I have learned to cope with it.

It happens when one is over tired and the brain does not disconnect properly on going into sleep state. Thus one is aware but because the body is sleeping nothing functions. Your senses, to varying extents, are operational but physically, you are asleep. Hence paralysis. I think the official term for this is something like sleep dissomething syndrome.

You are not alone with this. It is quite common. Substance abuse and drinking increase episode frequency and intensity.

Your Doctor will be able to advise you best on this condition.
