I'm not so sure it's an astral projection. The feeling of intense fear is completely out of sinc with it being so- any sort of feeling of excitement or fear during an OBE sends the soul straight back to the body and "positve" emotions are created during an OBE. However if the paralysis is only short lived this may be indeed exactly what is happening. In this state of "bed terror" do people see themselves below?
The symptoms described made me think, in fact, of death- a person not able to move but able to feel etc (if the continuence of the soul is believed). Maybe if there is spirits involved they are trying to put you in their place or take some of your energy. The fear experienced may mean an existing spirit had a violent or frightening death.
