I know this post is old as hell, but it's an interesting one.

Although I think the obvious solution here is the sleep paralysis, I'm surprised no one else has been thinking along the same lines as me, but maybe I'm the only sleepwalker here. =P

I've been a sleepwalker and a sleeptalker for years, and I whenever I jump out of bed or have a conversation with someone in my sleep, I am absolutely convinced at the time that I am wide awake. Sometimes I'll even remember the conversation in the morning!

Similarly, if I wake up mid-dream, and find myself in my bedroom, the dream will seem to continue there. For example, if I was thinking of being at university with my friends, I'll wake up and think they're sitting there around my room, chatting with me, and I'll feel embarassed for sitting in bed in my pyjamas.

If I wake up in bed during a particular horrific dream or nightmare, I'll feel a sort of paralysis, and the dream will continue in my head until I can find a light and turn it on. Until the light is on, I completely believe whatever was going on in my head was real; once the light is on, and I wake up in a few seconds, everything is fine.

For me, the paralysis is just a continuation of the dream, and the fear. I wouldn't have thought it that uncommon, really. I thought everyone had the same kind of night-time experiences, and associated it with my own sleepwalking, particularly because of the lack of control I had over my body. :o)

An interesting post, and I hope everyone with these traumatic experiences can just find a way to shut it off. I use the light... I think if your experiences are linked to a dream, like my own, try not to dwell on it too much, or you'll just bring the visions back again. Concentrate on positive thoughts as you go to bed, and don't let youreself get caught up in it. :o)

Goodluck, and try to stick to pleasant dreams! =)
