Hello,
we have recently acquired an early Mk1. The hull is in very good condition and the interior is virtually complete and original. It has a mast and boom but no rigging cables, we would like to restore this "Pandora" to her original condition and specifications. We know absolutely nothing about sailing craft as my main interest and usage is within the motor boat fraternity. Could anyone assist or help in relation to copy drawings photos etc of interior lay out/rigging,sail plans etc. Any help would be very much appreciated. Also could anyone advise as to where if any, the hull identification number would be located? So we can actually date its production more accurately, if anyone has heard of it it is called the "John E" and has not been renamed to our knowledge.
Many thanks in advance John and Keith.

p.s. could you also point us in the right direction so we may join the owners club and get sailing!!

Can anyone advise which currently-available jib sheet winches would fit our Pandora International? For instance, Harken B6 or B8 - although the B8 appears to have too large a diameter for the space available. Are there other makes that would suffice? We need to replace the original Barton winches (that have the handle underneath!) with winches adequate for this OAP to handle a large genoa singlehanded.

As you all might have guessed I'm about to launch for this season, so here's another question. Is it feasible to trailer the boat with the mast folded back, pin in place, and resting on a crosstree in the push pit. It would be supported 13 feet from the heel. I'm worried about stress on the mast during transport....roads are not great round here and it's a 35 mile journey.

In fact a large amount of something has been slathered around where the drain comes through on the inside of the hull, so I'm obviously not the first to have this problem with 686.

Hi all
I am new to sailing, so please forgive my ignorance. I have a Pandora International (Pilgrim's Lady) moored at Loe Beach, near Truro in Cornwall. I have unstepped the mast, with the intention of checking and maybe replacing the rigging and the navigation lights and cables. I have checked the collregs and I am now confused about the necessary navigation lights! Am I right in thinking that I can have a three-colour light atop the mast for sailing, and an all-round white light for anchoring, and that I need no other lights? At the moment, there is a three-colour on top of the mast, a white light on the pushpit, a white light on the transom, and another white light about two-thirds of the way up the mast. If I only need an all-round white for anchoring, can I fit it above or near the tricolour? Help!
Also, I want to replace the cables and have tried to pull the existing cables throught the mast, with a mouse lead attached, but they won't budge. Any ideas why?

Hi all
I've been beavering away at my new toy, an International, and quite by accident discovered that the gap between the cockpit deck and the underside moulding has been home to gallons (or the metric equivalent) of water, which has found its way in by various routes over the years. I drilled three smallish holes in the moulding below the companionway step, right at the point where it curves under the storage area. Water poured out and nearly filled the storage well! I have left the holes so that any other water can find an exit, since it is fairly easy to clear the water out of the storage well with a bailer. You might want to try this to see if you've been inadvertently carrying water inboard.

I`ve read several postings on here about trailers for the Pandora range. Well i can`t say about fin/drop keels, but if you own a bilge keel version (properly known as twin fin), there is a very easy, and often much cheaper, solution. When i bought my International in 91 she had a heavy duty 4 wheel trailer with 2 wide troughs for the keels to sit in. It took me a little while to realise that it was in fact a modified CAR trailer. Unfortunately i left the boat in a boatyard for quite a few years without launching due to lack of funds, and in that time i did`nt see her for a couple of years. As a result the trailer just rotted a bit too much, so i`m now looking at the modified car trailer option myself. You can pick up a good condition used car trailer (heavy duty) a lot cheaper than a purpose made boat one. All you have to do is to cut down the wheel troughs to the desired length. My trailor also had 3 scaffold clamps, 1 behind the jockey wheel and 1 either side at the front of the keel troughs which were location points for 3 galvanised scaffold poles to align the boat with strategicaly placed marks when the trailor was under water. It made retreaval so much easier and quicker. I hope this may be of benefit to some owners. Happy sailing........ Neil.

Hi everyone.

I have posted a couple of messages here on this forum which I found the other day, but I feel that its time to come clean with you all. Although I do in fact own a Pandora ( A 700 no684 ) I also own and run Abersoch Boatyard Services Ltd, funnily enough based in Abersoch N Wales.

My yard looks after a good number of the North Wales fleet, preparing them for the water and carrying out jobs for owners and advising them over the winter months.

As much as I enjoy prodding boats my main passion is sailing them, (so if you want to sail lots NEVER buy a boatyard!!) and 2007 will see No 684 back on the water for the first time in a good few years.

Having probably the largest fleet in the country I would like to set up a register, to run alongside the Owners Association, of all the Pandoras that are still around.

This will not cost anyone any money and I am prepared to donate as much time to this as needed, and I hope it will become as lively as the Pandora Week dinners have been over the past years, ( so I'm told!!), and perhaps it will encourage more people to come and join in the fun that is Welsh open week.

Any thoughts on this would be most welcome.

All the best

Tim

No hull number was found by the two prior owners so it has been given a new serial number. I would like to get its hull number on the title it I can find it. If anyone out there has one of these real old Van de Stadt built boats and can tell me where I can find the hull number, I would appreciate it. Also, if you have discovered any particular weak areas (especially considering the 40 yr age!) that you could share with me or any meaningful upgrades you have been able to make. This was a pretty stripped down model ... no frills. Thanks and good sailing!

Hi all,

I have just become the new owner of a Pandora Mk1, known as Jumbuck, sail No P260. Just thought I'd make myself known on this forum board.

This weekend will see myself and crew moving her from her present location of Solva to her new mooring in Pembroke Dock. Here's hoping all goes well. I might even do a post event report early next week.

Hi Everyone.

I thought I should put a note on here about Pegasus Yachts who are based just outside Lowestoft in Suffolk. Some of you guys may have dealt with them as they are the suppliers of Pandora specific bits such as 700 rudder skegs and much more.

It has come to my attention that the site which they operate from, including a marina and storage facility, is being sold off by its owners.

This will put Pegasus Yachts out of business and mean that many of the original bits and bobs will be lost, although this isnt nearly as important as the loss to the Coooper family who currently run Pegasus Yachts.

This might not seem like a particularly important issue to many of us, but when put into context, more than half a dozen boatyards on the same broad have been closed and redeveloped over the past few decades and Pegasus Marina is the only remaining one, and it may soon be gone.

There is a website which explains the issue much better than I have just done.

Please read and help. www.savepegasus.blogspot.com

Hello, I sail Pandora Mk1 Number 335. It has twin keels. Some time in the past, rods have been fixed between the trailing edge of each keel and the hull. I've been told that these are here for no structural reasons but to prevent mooring lines fouling and catching on the swept back part of the keels. I understand that it has been known for boats to have been sunk on moorings due to such fouling.
I have two questions.
1) has anyone experienced such fouling of mooring lines or heard of it? My mooring has quite heavy chain on it all the way up to the mooring bouy and find it difficult to see tide/wind conditions that would case the chain to get wraped round the back of the keels. It may be more possible with a rope riser.
2) What is the effect on performance caused by the addition of these rods?

Any thoughts, information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm returning to Greece to fix up my Son's Pandora International (1976). He has sailed it all over the eastern Med and it is currently on the hard in Prevesa just south of Corfu. He mentioned that the gasket for the forward hatch was gone and he shipped a good deal of water in some rough seas just before putting it up for the season. Can anyone advise me where I might get the gasket or a possible substitute? I am in the U.S. at the moment and will be leaving for Italy and thence to the boat. Short notice, but I just found out about the problem. I plan to sail it around the northern Ionian and then over to Italy, up the east coast and then NE across the Adriatic to Croatia. Being a teacher I'v got 6 weeks to do the trip in. Having sailed it to Turkey and throughout the Agean it should be an easy voyage. Are there any Pandoras I might meet in the areas I'll be crusing?

Thanks,

Hello you all there!!

I'm currently the proud owner of a Trotter Pandora, and I believe it's one of the oldest still afloat.
It is the first version, which is 'converted' from the randmeer.
This year I was allowed to compete in the Dutch Classic Yacht Regatte along with al types of old wooden and steel yachts. This year was the first time GRP boats were allowed to compete, as long as the mould is from before 1965.
In my class (cruisers up to 28 ft I was overall winner and in the overall cruiser claas (up to 40? ft) I finished second!!!
Now to the point of this message, I would like to invite the owners of the oldet version of the Trotter Pandora (the Mk1 is already to old...) to come and join me at the next Dutch Classic Yacht Regatta in 2007!!

I hope there will be some response, and for more information check www.dcyr.nl

Can anyone tell me please, the neatest method of adding, for example, an extra cleat or other fitting which involves bolting through and encountering headlining. Is this also drilled for nut access and then the hole masked in some way, say with plastic capping bits? I decided to make my own foresail reefing gear, using a v pulley at the bottom end of the unit and ball raced swivel at top. Not wanting to compromise the forestay on our International, the system was installed by anchoring the unit 200 mil aft of the forestay base by putting a shackle fixing through the deck, fixed to a ss plate,- easily got at by opening the anchor locker hatch. From then on it was easy, clipped the tack onto the pulley and hoisted away on the halyard. It furls swiftly and neatly, the beauty of the system being using 10 metres of 6mm line in a continuous loop means you can stop at any point and cleat-off.
Went out today for a trial and all was well.
I also will try using the forestay to hank on another genny for downwinding, instead of wrestling with a spinnaker.

Would a boat this size be able to comfortably cross to Ireland, or navigate around Anglesey? How many people could realistically be accomodated for a weekend cruise (staying at marinas)? How much cabin headroom is there? Are there any weaknesses to especially look out for when buying this type of yacht?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Obviously this is to avoid interfering with steering. Be grateful to know if this is normal, and if it's okay like that. My neighbour on his Leisure 23 has a forked backstay. Seems like a good idea. Date Posted: Friday, December 22, 08:06:13pm

Preceded by much nail-biting, the mast on Swansong was raised today whilst on its mooring, and it all went so well that I thought I'd jot down the system which was somewhat based on a pbo article(Mar.2003 page 60) A couple of 3m lengths of galv, tubing 30mm diam were fixed at the bottom end with shackles to the foremost deck rings. At the apex end, a through bolt joined them together, and I made up a four-one with two pairs of pulley blocks. The mast was hanging over the stern, horizontally but supported by a sort of home-made boom crutch which sat down into the outboard well and was about two metres in length from the base of the well to the top. This enabled the point of balance to be just kept inboard whilst the mast was pushed aft to locate its heel in its brackets and the locating pin shoved through. The galvy triangle was lifted vertical, and the forestay locked onto the through bolt.(The backstay was already fixed but slack) One pair of double blocks was shackled to the apex and the other pair down at the bow roller. Some twenty metres of 6mm line was threaded through the blocks and led aft to the port winch.
Now, the mast could have been lifted at this stage but there was a danger of a sideways topple, so did two things to help avoid this.(a) the aft lowers were attached, but of course were too slack until the mast was almost vertical. (b)tied a horizontal spinnaker pole across the cabin top centred on the mast base brackets, and two guys from each end taken up to that little hoop on the mast where the halyards clip.
Anyway, that was that, and a firm smooth operation of the winch brought the whole thing up with no probs. It was quite easy to unclip the forestay and fix it to its normal location. There was no wind which helped enormously.

I have a Pandora International and have noticed that my starboard bulkhead has a bow in it; I assume it is created by too much compression. It’s about an inch off the vertical at the worst point.

I slackened off the rigging to reduce the compression and the bow is still there. There is no sigh of crazing or stress on the cabin top above the bulkhead or around the foot of the mast.

It does not seem easy to replace the bulkhead as it appears that it was put in place before the cabin top is put on and won’t come out without surgery and then how do you fit a new one?

Has anybody else seen this or replaced a bulkhead?
Any thoughts are most welcome as fixing this is my number one winter job, but I’m currently scratching my head.

Many thanks to Chris and Delia, Tim, and John for the helpful insights into the lowers and caps. I did indeed find the same problem with the caps and so have pop-rivetted a stainless steel collar around this area too. I noticed that at both there is a little damage where the cables emerge and chew the opening at the bottom of the hole. To hopefully overcome this, strips of 1mm thick ss were cut to the same width as the slot, and about 75mm long; these were coated with chromatic paste, folded in half and squeezed in the vice. When the ends were then slightly opened with a screwdriver, they could be clipped onto the bottom of each slot and tapped down until they fit snugly and securely like streamlined clothes pegs. I also used this method at the top of the slots,- rather an afterthought, but found they sit secured under the new collars.
As an aside, it was a gorgeous day on the mooring, cool breeze but warm sun and shirtsleeves (no shirt, just the sleeves) and there on the foreshore was a little egret, wading about under the heronry.
Thank you all again. I cant promise not to find more problems! All the best, Tony
