Have now managed to take down the mast whilst on swinging mooring,-a hairy operation but successful. Examination reveals slight damage:- the lower shrouds which I had expected to be held inside the mast by wee hooky bits, turn out instead to be fixed by means of a through-mast bolt, a tang, which goes through thimbles on the four lowers, and the cable of each is swaged. This swaging has had, presumably, thirty years of chipping away at the mast innards and is beginning to show on the outside. I intend riveting a collar around the damage and that should cure the problem. Question(probably another one for the well of silence which often follows) Is the fixing normal on an International? Regards, Tony

My 1973 Pandora international has bilge keels. The heads of the keel bolts appear to have been glassed over when the boat was made.

Around one of the bolts there are some cracks in the covering of GRP, and there is a small amount of water seeping in.

Has anyone any experience with changing keel bolts on bilge keels? Do the bolts actually pass right through these keels? This seems unlikely to me as the keels are quite thin in section.

With thanks
John

When I bought my Pandora International, the forehatch had been removed and the gap fibreglassed over. I would like to fit a replacement, I think this would have to be a standard manufactured hatch, even if I could obtain a Pandora forehatch, the edges to fit it to have been removed. I wondered if anybody had ever seen a Pandora with a non original forehatch? I think most of them would be too wide, they are usually squareish, compared to the Pandora one which looks more rectangular. I have seem a very cheap Plastimo hatch, made of plastic so not particularly nice looking, 380mm square, only £20, and it may be small enough to actually fit onto the flat area. Ideally it would be nice to have a hatch big enough to climb through, which this isn't, but at least it allows through ventilation, and sails can be passed up/down.

Many thanks for the feedback re-seals. Given the urgency I bought some neoprene from Seals Direct & on a rather wet trip to/from Holland plus lumpy seas did not have any leaks through the forehatch.

Many thanks guys & sorry for the massive delay in thanking you.

I have one genoa. I think it's a number two. Above the tack is a second cringle, matched on the leach by a reinforced stitched tape. They appear to be for reefing purposes. If so, how would this be organised? If the sail is rolled and tied at these two points, would it not unroll in the middle and become a baggy mess ? No other points exist for tying-in. Suggestions please. Tony

I own a 1974 Pandora International, twin-keeled, that is currently undergoing an extensive refit. I am aiming for good cruising performance and have no racing ambitions, although I may enter her for the Round The Island just for the fun.

One of the possibilities that I am considering is a new mainsail. I am particularly interested in the Doyle Stackpack, which relies on a fully-battened main with lazyjacks. I am familiar with this type of mainsail, having had it fitted on a previous yacht.

Does anyone have any experience of fitting this kind of mainsail to a Pandora and/or are there any technically-minded gurus out there who can see any particular advantages or disadvantages in terms of the yacht's performance? In addiiton, if anyone understands racing (which I don't) am I landing myself in trouble if I install such a mainsail arrangement from the point of view of entering my yacht in the RTIR? For example, does it affect the handicap pr result in disqualification, etc? To be clear, I have no intention of doing any regular racing or of trying to enter a one-design fleet such as the one at Abersoch.

All observations gratefully received - especially before the Southamptob Boat Show (in case they have discounts!).

Many thanks

Is there any facility on this website where members can post photos? A photo of a rigged boom would help a lot. ( Southern Lightning is a 1974 international, no. 638)

Delighted to find this forum as someone who has just bought a Pandora as their first serious sailboat. In fact I'm now the owner of Southern Lightning which I note was previously owned by another forum contributor.
I'm moored in Sneem harbour, on the Kenmare River In Co. Kerry.
Having just gotten the boat onto this mooring, I have sucessfully stepped the mast ( thanks mostly to this website!) and am at the stage of rigging the boom, bending on the mainsail and sorting the running rigging.
My question is, and please forgive my ignorance, the boom goes onto the articulated pin on the mast, and there are two hooks which I presume are reefing hooks. But apart from the downhaul, should there be anything else holding the boom in position on it's pin?
Secondly, I was in the fortunate position that there was a new suit of sails with the boat when purchased. The mainsail seems to be loose footed, in that there are only slugs on the foot at the tack and the clew. Is this standard?

After weighing up all the options available to me, I think I would like a Pandora International or 700; however my mooring is to be on the East coast and drys.

Ideally I would like a swing keel for the best balance of pace and groundability, however plenty of people have suggested that the right sort of fin will dig into the mud. Is the Pandora's fin strong enough for this?

If I go for the swing-keel, is the accomidation compromised by the keel box?

From what I have read, the bilge keel versions are rather too slow. I am tempted to take part in a few club races and although I can't hope to live with the bigger boats, I don't want to be mooring up when everyone else is onto desert!

Trailing a Pandora is not too difficult. But be aware of the weight and the strict road traffic regulations regarding what can pull what.
My 700 on its trailer weighs in at around 1800kg of which 440kg is the trailer! The boat's ex factory displacement is 1150kg and then there is all the gear, engine, anchor and chain, cooker, battery etc. Most motor manufactures state the max permissable tow weight and the gross train weight. I doubt an ordinary saloon car will cope. I use a Nissan X-Trail which can tow 2000kg, LR Discoveries and Range Rovers can tow 3500kg.
Getting the mast up and down is quite interesting too! At least two people are needed and a third hand does not go amiss. The mast must be supported on crutches when being transported.
Launching from a slip is not too difficult but take care you probably need some form of extension beam, otherwise the car is going to get very wet, remember the boat my draw 1.1m but you must allow for the height of the tailer sole plate on whch the boat sits. Recovery however is another question, as a tip fit either docking arms or a keel guide to the trailer. Also be very careful about the fore and aft balance of the boat on the trailer, too far aft and the trailer will rear up and the boat will launch itself, in the water or not!

Firstly I know nothing about boats in general, however a friend of mine has recently bought a pandora mk1 with a fixed keel. He intends to take it to a variety of destinations on a trailer and launch it into the water down the slipway. Having seen the boat I am a little concerned that it may be a bad idea, and would hate to see someone get hurt/killed! Could anyone offer any information on whether this is the right boat for the job and how safe it will be? Any thoughts would be sincerely appreciated.

Hello all. I have recently purchased a Pandora 700 drop keel- Morea. Having just put her in the water I cannot get the keel to drop- I never thought to check if there was a safety pin or similar holding it up when it was on the trailer. Can anyone clear this up for me before I go for a swim??!! That water is still cold on the Scottish West Coast.

My son-in-law has just restored an old Pandora Mk1 and had big problems with the drop keel jamming. I should explain that we sail in a tidal estuary and the boat sits on shingly mud at low tide. We suspect that the drop keel, which looks a bit manky, might not be original and may be too thin. Would anybody be kind enough to let us have a specification for the correct plate - just a weight or a thickness would do, or any other suggestions. Many thanks.

Incidently, ex Flying Dutchmen sails are fine for the Mk1.

She is a great boat and has only had two owners since new (built 1978) - I have sailed her for the past 25 years!. Anyway as the years have gone on either I've got bigger or she has got smaller (my wife knows the answer!) so I'm moving onto something a bit bigger. Any suggestions appreciated. Is the actual website still taking ads?

I want to fit a second genoa halyard to my Mark 1 Pandora 22. The turn block/wheel is already in the top of the mast but the block isn't fitted at the base. There are 3 opennings each side at the foot of the mast. Each threesome has an axle pin which slides through the centre of the blocks and is retained by a split pin. The blocks/wheel are present only for those halyards that are fitted.

Does anyone know where I can get extra blocks to fit. My mast doesn't appear to have the makers name on it! Could someone tell me who made the mark 1's mast.

I have to admit to owning a Prelude rather than a Pandora but I understand that, as they were produced by the same manufacturer (Rydgeway), they have a similar design of hull/deck connection. This consists of stainless screws fitted through the rubbing strake, deck and hull and secured on the inside with stainless nuts and CARBON Steel penny washers (in common with most of the deck fittings!). Large diameter domed plastic protectors are fitted over the nuts and washers.

As many of the washers have corroded (surprise! surprise!) I was contemplating trying to change them out for stainless ones without removing the rubbing strake. Has anyone performed this operation with success and does anyone know where the large plastic dome protectors can be obtained?

Alternatively I could use dome nuts or the more common smaller plastic nut covers, but they won't cover the washers and won't be as 'occupant friendly' or as neat.

Thanks to Kirk, Neil and Graham for your advice on engine size. I am very nearly now the proud owner of an International and am hoping to fit her with a sea toilet. However when we looked at the space provided between the forepeak berths it didn't seem deep enough to place the sea toilet without it protruding above the level of the berths. I was wondering if anybody had a sea toilet fitted to their boat and if so were the berths still useable?

I've recently dealt with AS to do with work and have been very impressed with their workmanship. I'd never heard of stale fuel before until my very reliable Yamaha 4 stroke outboard just wouldn't run. It would start but wouldn't rev. It just kept dying on me.
I looked at the outboard handbook and it mentioned stale fuel as one of the reasons for not running. Thinking back I had just topped up the fuel tank with fuel from a can that had been sitting in my garage (no idea how old it was).
So I drained out the old fuel and flushed it through with new and away she went.
I did speak to our local guru on outboards and he said "this happens more than you think" he also said stale fuel becomes thicker and loses it's smell. He advised me to buy some carbaretor cleaner from a car parts shop and spray it into the carb to remove any old fuel that may be lurking still inside.
Just felt this is something we should all know cos it's a so and so it your outboard packs up while manouevering in the marina. I now carry a pair of paddles in the locker.
Happy revving.

I live in Guernsey, I am looking for the above in fin keel version and resonable condition. Hopefully she would be based on the South Coast or with a trailer if not. Anybody with such a vessel I would be very keen to hear from you, either through the e-mail or on 01481723573 during the day. Look forward to hearing from you. Phil.

We are trying to obtain window rubbers - the bit that goes round the two mouldings before the window is fitted - and may have some to spare, if others need it.

Hi - my name is Keith Wilson and I have owned a Pandora now for over ten years [ I think it`s a mark 1 ] the Yacht`s name is " Cariad " and has a fin keel , the sail No is P 250 ,the rest of it is in reasonable condition . .
I live in Glasgow but I spend the whole summer months from March to October sailing from St Monans nr Anstruther Fife ,mainly day cruising on the East Coast
At the end of last season I met a Tim Light from Aberdeen.who visited St Monans and told me about the Pandora Club and I am intrested in it . I would also like to know of any other Scottish Pandora Owners ???
I am fairly new to the internet and I would to reply to some articles in your news letter . [ towing and rigging ]
I hope to hear from you as soon as possible .

Hi All

I have my mk1 on the lawn at the front of the house at the moment - I was busy on her this weekend, freeing various fittings that haven’t moved for years, and I got to pondering what the best modification to make on a Pandora is.

I was thinking of raising the mainsheet block of the deck, as it is difficult to work there. I have seen a picture on this site showing someone else had done it.

Are there any must have fixes on these boats? Running lines to the cockpit, adjustable genoa cars, main sheet travelers, ladder etc?

I recently trashed ARAGORNS main sail in the middle of the Bristol Channel, then ordered a new one from Kemp sails, who accepted my deposit but now say they need the sail dimensions before they can make my sail. However, I aint got a clue what they measurements be, so if any one knows the measurements for an internationals main, please let me know. cheers Simon of ARAGORN

We are looking to buy another pandora international, as we are back out of poverty status.
We have previously owned two internationals, one called Southern Lightning, and the other called drumbeat.
Prefer a bilge keel although would accept fin.
Please let us know if anybody knows of one.
cheers
Gary
