Date Posted: 18:16:28 05/18/03 Sun In reply to: concerned fan 's message, "Port thriving or dying" on 04:14:58 05/17/03 Sat So what is the difference between someone on the committee and a local. As far as I am aware, all barr maybe one or two of the committee have grown up in and with Port Kembla - doesn't that make them locals as well as committee members?? Yes - I do think the Port club is going well. Yes - I would like to have more Port Juniors in Firsts. And Yes - I do want a competitive club. If you think we're going down the wrong path then there's two things for you to do "concerned fan". Number one - get out from behind your pathetic psuedonym and use your real name as I use mine. Secondly - join the committee. I seem to hear a few people (disgruntled with something) who like to throw in their two cents and say what a lousy job the committee are doing (very few who compliment us I might add) but these same people are nowhere to be seen when all the work has to be done. Get off your arse and do something about what you see as being the wrong thing that we are doing. Get involved and then maybe your arguments might be given some credit. Why did we remove our message board? Because while some were using it in the constructive and light-hearted way it was meant for, there were those of you who did nothing but bag our club. That's not a bad thing in itself, but when it gets personal against certain players/staff and the authors are too gutless to add their real name to the posting, it doesn't fo any good for all concerned. In the meantime, we'll continue to run the club in the best interests of our club. And it might help for you to get your facts straight also. Nine locals from last year you say? Well let's see - Mark Simon has gone to Canberra to play at a higher level, Ben Fera has been injured for most of the year, Greg Hardy (I am assuming he is one of your locals) is not playing league this year, Robert Freimayer has only recently returned to play with Port. That leaves 5 to speak of. Now how many locals have we played in the top grade this year - Paul Lokys, Craig Simon, Nick Nikitaras, David Bartlett, Paul Denniss and a 16 year old Port boy by the name of Christian Kupenga - that looks like six to me - I don't think that's a bad effort. Sure we have some guys from Sydney playing with us, but how long does it take for them to be referred to as "Port boys". I know they refer to themselves as Port Boys. For most of them it's their third year with the club. Some of the guys we have will leave at the end of the year, but a good share of them look like being here for a while yet. Again, if you want a say in the running of the club, get off your arse and join the committee - the extra hands will be welcome. I must say though, there is one thing out of your comments I agree with "concerned fan" - "Go Reserve Grade and Eighteens" - these guys are just as valuable to our club as the guys currently playing in the first grade side. there's some good talent in both teams, particularly in the 18's who we will look to to fill many of our first and reserve grade places in years to come.
