Kiersten,
I'm glad you liked it. I loved it. I cried at least twice-- the one part when Sylvia is getting ready for the benefit and she is saying (in her mind) to Allegra about Allegra "You let Allegra be happy!"
Also, the ending with Sylvia-- I won't spoil it for anyone, but you know the ending. Well done. Notice that it isn't totally entirely happy nor sad-- wrapped up very much like a Jane Austen novel typically was.
I'd love to talk more about it with you! Let's do a similar book club this fall! Fun!
One more thing...I love the Twain quote, "Everytime I read Sense and Sensibility I want to dig Jane Austen up and hit her on the head with her shin bone." Laughed so hard! He hates her... but he reads her enough to say "every time"! Ha! Why read something you hate? He loves her, doesn't want to admit it. ;-)
Kiersten, which character did you most identify with? Me...I loved Bernadette.
Karen, the author, I think is a perfect blend of Joycelyn, Sylvia and Bernadette, but mostly Sylvia.
Oh yeah, I was talking to my mom about the Joycelyn part (her teenage trauma...) I was thinking, "Eew. I really don't like having to encounter that in reading..." even though it wasn't a major part of the book. So my mom and I were talking about it, and the thing is, she said when she read that part she was like "Oh yeah. That was common," and she could identify with it. But now days, girls are more likely to stand up for themselves and realize that what is happening is wrong. And then the whole "woman's awareness" club in college, that also reminded me of my mom.
Anyway, I could go on. You can tell...;-)
Love ya!
