I'd like to chip in my two cents as someone who's part of the syndrome you're talking about. My parents aren't all that computer literate, so as I grew up I had a big gap where I was (theoretically) supposed to have "respect for intellectual property." Nowadays I have zero moral qualms about downloading an album off the net, although I would never even _consider_ stealing the same album form a store, because that would be stealing. (If you think that statement is ridiculous, I mean it in all seriousness.)
The interesting part of this is how my disregard for intellectual property rights has changed my spending habits... before mp3s appeared on the scene, I didn't own any music. Nothing. Now I have a CD tower filled with albums , all of which I like very much, because I heard it first for free. Similarly, I'm slowly beginning to collect anime series that I like, and I wouldn't even _consider_ doing that until I had seen the whole series. The investment is just too great.
Obviously, I'm just one person, and obviously, there are people who similarly disregard the law but don't feel honor-bound to pay for anything they download. However, they can't be the majority, because if they were the entire recording industry would already be belly-up. So I'm going to go out on a limb and say I think there's still a place for fansubbing, even of licensed anime. I think that most (not all, but most) people are responsible enough to pay for what they like, instead of paying to figure out whether they like something. But that could just be the idealist in me talking nonsense.
