Just thought I'd chime in as someone who cut his fansubbing
teeth back in 1991. Waaaay back then, fansubbing was the
only way you could see this stuff translated -- with the
same wide range of translation quality you get today. Now,
however, commercial versions of shows hit the shelves here
in the U.S. six months after they come out in Japan. Hell,
most of the screenplays I got for Big O season 2 were dated
TWO DAYS before I received 'em. That's fast.

So, with the altruistic underpinnings of fansubbing now
removed, what's left? Ego. From all I've seen, it's all
about getting your subs out there before the other guy. Why
else add in your group's credits during the show's opening
credits? It sure ain't about quality -- or at least, not
as I define it. They're obsessed with encoding quality,
not translation quality. The translation is ALWAYS an
afterthought. Group name? Check. Ripped source? Check.
Illegible font filled with serifs and curlicues? Check.
Translation? Aw, we'll just download something.

And I also think that there's one other factor keeping
fansubbing alive (applying to digisubs here). Hardcore
downloaders expect this stuff to be free. I honestly think
that they have this weird Weltanschauung that says that
anything digital is inherently free. When you buy a CD or
DVD in the store, what you're paying for is the packaging.
What's on the disk itself can't be charged for -- because
hey, you download that off the net.

Anyway, that's my curmudgeonly opinion and I'm sticking to
it. Now get off my lawn, you goldurn kids! I'll smack ya
with my cane! Everything was better when I was a kid!
