Much in this thread is over-stated and silly , but there is a kernel of truth in it.

I have always thought it best to stay off the subject because if Noel was indeed gay, at least he lived a life consistent with his belief that to be gay was wrong. I think that is very sad, but he lived a life which we must assume was celibate, so unless people are saying being gay is wrong, I can't see what Noel did wrong in his own choice of lifestyle.

However, I do think that the way he made marrieds feel like second class citizens in the kingdom of God, the way he made it incredibly difficult for people to court ("relate") and get married, the way people who wanted to marry were denigrated as if they were only marrying to have sex, the way that unmarried couples were split up and told to have no contact, the way that celibate was taught as the higher way, etc etc etc....

was almost certainly born out of Noel's perception of sex (if not out of his own sexuality, whatever that was) and in that sense, whatever he believed or felt, he had a terribly destructive effect on many people's lives.
