On a related issue to how an Avatar should behave, and how they are limited by the body and brain of their incarnation. For over a decade now I have been following the life of the Spanish boy Osel Hita Torres, formally recognised as the reincarnation of the Tibetan Lama Thubten Yeshe.

According to his followers Lama Yeshe had achieved enlightenment and had no need to be reborn, but he had promised his followers he would come back to them.

The Spanish boy Osel passed all the tests and was recognised by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of Lama Yeshe. Many who knew Lama Yeshe said that as a young boy Osel spoke to them of things known only to themselves and Lama Yeshe.

Still, the boy Osel (now Lama Osel Rinpoche) also had his own personality, and his past life memories seem to have faded. He still needed normal schooling, not remembering everything he had learnt in his last incarnation.

It is a fascinating story, and much of it is online. The writer Vicki Mackenzie, a follower of Lama Yeshe, has written about the young reincarnation. She tells of how she finally asked the young boy if he was indeed the reincarnation of the High Lama.

"I took my courage in both hands and, just befor I left Kopan, decided to confront Osel myself. The moment was quiet, relaxed, informal. We were alone at the family house, in the bedroom with the baby. 'Kunkyen has hair,' remarked Osel, lifting up the baby's darkening locks. 'Where's your hair?' I joked with Osel, who loves having his head shaved. 'Gone' he replied with a grin, lifting both hands into the air. 'Why has it gone?' I asked, intrigued to know if he had a reason. 'I am one monk,' replied Osel in all seriousness.

"Then I asked it: 'Are you Lama Yeshe?'; Osel: 'No, I am Tensin Osel.' Then he paused for some long seconds, thinking, formulating words. 'Before I am Lama Yeshe. Now Tenzin Osel, one monk.' "
