Look in the index of Autobiography of a Yogi under bangles and karma and you will get a lot of information. As I recall he mentions kriya as the ultimate method but prayer, bangles, and intercession of the guru are also powerful. Many devotees get emotional like Christians about Master taking 25% of the karma, as he said '25% is your effort, 25% the guru's efoort and 50% the grace of God.' This is a very well known quote of Yoganandaji.

In my opinion these were not exact percentages but illistrate a point. Besides that, I lean towards self-effort in kriya as the only significant way to burn karma--that ispurify the 3 bodies and nervous system. Once that is done the guru awakens the kundalini via shaktipat. He does not have to be present physically to do so. This is a rare occurance because few devotees work hard enough to purify the vehicle so it can handle the current. When a person does 100% effort long enough to accomplish purification of the channels, the grace of God comes thru the guru. These are important points I try to remember so as not to get lazy.

Some karmas have to be simply lived through or endured. I remember one person telling Brother Anandamoy he wanted a child, but has decided to "do more kriyas to get rid of the karma". Brother laughed and said, "thats not the way it works." A kriyaban astrologer says the parabda karma coming up in this life should be allowed to run its course if it does no harm and does not hurt our yoga practices. With adverse thoughts or urges one can say no and use gentle will
to renounce them and they fade off.

In my 15 years of intense yoga I have realized the futility of asceticism also, and repression, notably of emotions. Too much fasting is a weakness. But the main one is repressing emotions. When emotions build one has to transmute by exersize or hitting a punching bag or therapy sessions. These have proven to be big karma releasers for me and other yogis. I have watched people's physical bodies morph in front of me as they released a gross energy or karma that in many cases began many lives ago!

Lahiri cautions about sadhu practices of surrounding oneself with 5 fires, fasting, etc. It makes one unable to do yoga. Truly, our line of Gurus state that kriya is the ultimate way to burn karma, though not the only. Other things I mentioned are accesories well valued.

best wishes

Sundarar
