I will tell you something I have learned in my own sadhana. Anytime I have ever felt there were certain events that occured where my own karmic situation was altered by the grace of my Guru (this has happened a good number of times now), it always only occured whenever I was inwardly surrendered to Guru. If I felt I was tackling a certain problem by myself I was always left to my own devices in solving it. But if I turned to the blessings of God and Gurus within, my problems would tend to work themselves out regardless of the way I tried to work them out.

IMHO, the role of the Guru and the abundance of blessings that come by surrendering unconditionally to his grace in any matter cannot be overemphasized on the spiritual path.
