Patanjali says any asana that is steady and comfortable will do, but you have to be sitting up. Head neck and spine should be in a straight line with chin parralel to floor.

Hatha yoga poses padmasana, siddhasana, sukhasana and vajrasana are recomeded. I have to believe you can see them on the net if you do a search.

Cross legged is slightly better than sitting on a chair, though Yogananda said it didn't really matter and most SRF people use a western chair. In my experience the pranic currents are stilled a bit sitting cross legged, not to mention the heart has to pump like 10% less when you are cross legged. The crossed legs direct energy into the base of the spine instead of down the legs. This is highlighted in the SRF articles on hatha yoga published in SRF magazines in the 60's. Word is SRF Brother Abhedananda who was a medical doctor in france is getting the material together for a hatha yoga book for SRF. This would be nice as I have the articles and they would blow away most books on the market today on the subject.

It is vital you master one pose for meditation. To master it is said to mean you can sit in it 3 hours without moving (except for miniscule little shifts perhaps). I myself use sukhasana and do it on a bed. It is simply sitting "indian style" as many kids call it. It makes a difference from sitting on a chair for me. Besides if you go into a high state it is more stable.

peace
