This is no time to be scaring away audience for the sake of artistic freedom. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has survived a season of Buffy in mind-numbing depression topped off with the death of a character that enraged a significant number of fans. It was the story ME wanted to tell. But it did lose ratings in the process. I don't think Firefly can afford to get too controversial right now on the hope that it can draw a bigger audience of people who weren't interested without the controversial elements. Like everyone else, I think showing the slapdash "The Train Job" as the first episode may have hurt the show more than anything else. But, now they are in a postion where it certainly will be cancelled if they don't make changes. But it will just as surely be cancelled if they alienate much of the audience it now has. Hopefully ME will use the hiatus to come up with something to both bring in new viewers and keep those it has. And for once I'm fairly sure that a vampire with a soul isn't going to do the trick. ;o)
