Subject: Why those scenes were still a mistake

Okay, provocative title there. I want to make it clear before I begin that I liked both the Inara/Councilor scenes and the graphic, graphic torture ones, too. But, at the time they aired, I was marveling that this was being shown at eight o'clock and thinking there could be some negative consequences.

No way we didn't permanently lose at least a few of the more conservative viewers. We also lost some the people who might have been watching with their families. The controversy on other boards is a sure sign that some portion of the audience strongly disliked those scenes, and some of them are gonna bail. The loss will be miniscule, probably less than half of a per cent, I don't know. But any loss right now, with the season on the line, is serious stuff. I am not arguing that the viewers are right. I am arguing, however, that this was a stupid time to push buttons.

Please, no "blahblahblah goodriddance blahblahblah artistic freedom cakes" responses. I already agree. I want to know whether other people think they hadn't thought this through, or whether they think ME'd decided to let their freak flag fly, even if it meant the show might be canceled because of it. And if the latter, do they agree with that position.
