I like your ideas on how the Companion Guild came about.Perhaps part of their training involves cross-cultural instruction on diplomacy as well,so as to ensure a well trained Companion will not offend or break taboos within the "society" she is working in,thus the snarky "Ambassador" title Mal stuck her with.

I came away from "Serenity" having some real questions about how Inara fell in love with Mal as well. I take real issue with someone who supposedly loves a woman publicly treating her so poorly.....I see echoes of Buffy/Spike in this relationship ("I can't possibly love you because you are evil/a whore") and I was hoping we would see a break from this type of abusive relationship when Firefly began airing.Hmmnn,guess I was hoping for too much,wasn't I? And the fact you are driven in both cases to root for the underdog (Spike/Inara) when it comes to this hopeless sort of love just makes it that much sadder,IMHO.

Oh well,at least we have Zoe/Wash to even the scales.Now *that* is a relationship that is fun!
