Interesting insights, CW. I tend to agree that this episode was not as strong as some we've seen; but I found plenty of enjoyable moments in it nonetheless.

"“The sash indicates lordhood” - So the Alliance gives out titles of nobility? Or is having a noble present just a necessary bit of flavor for the atmosphere of the ball?"

I don't think Lord was an alliance title, I think it was a local one. The planet where this story takes place seemed to have a very elaborate social hierarchy--slaves and lords clearly mentioned, doubtless several other classes of "middling folk." I think this place is one of the more developed areas on the fringes of alliance control, but still on the fringes.

"The belle of the ball - I can see Kaylee off in a corner somewhere talking shop with a half dozen men. But, having them hanging on her every word just doesn’t show any understanding about male conversations or how men act in groups. Don’t get me wrong. The gentlemen might be every bit as interested in her as was shown here, but in reality they would demonstrate it in much subtler ways."

I actually rather liked this bit. It struck me as the equivalent of a bunch of men sneaking away from the cocktail party to watch the World Series or something. More to the point, I think it illustrates that Kaylee is one of the guys and is more comfortable conversing with men than with women. You are probably correct that it could've been handled more subtly, but I see it as more a statement about Kaylee than about the men around her.

It may also give us a clue about this planet: it suggests that these men are really more comfortable discussing engines than dancing. That might mean that these men have recently acquired their upper-class status or that the difference between upper- and lower-classes on this planet may be relatively small. This would hardly be the first society in history to simulate the trappings of gentility in a backwater outpost. The more I think about that idea, the better I like it. It might also explain why Atherton is willing to duel with Mal. (I may also be reaching . . . :-)

Just my $.02
