Subject: Now, please don't accuse me of loving everything, but...
In reply to: Cactus Watcher 's message, "CW's Writer's journal for "Shindig" (spoilers for the ep)" on 09:16:09 11/02/02 Sat

...although I know that last week's episode was an overall better hour, with greater depth, I enjoyed this episode more. I thought it was a real hoot, and I had a great time. In every other episode, there were a least a few moments when I was getting a little antsy and I thought the pacing wasn't perfect. This one completely held my attention, and I thought was just a lot of fun.

Things I loved...

**Kaylee, and how she comes back from feeling hurt to chat with all the gentlemen about spaceship repair. I think this really worked, because it shows that guys get bored by the bland girls who can't hold their own in a coversation...and here is a girl who can not only talk, but about "guy" things that they're interested in. And, in general, the fact that despite the way Kaylee normally carries herself, that she also wants to feel attractive and feminine sometimes. And it really got to me how Mal apologized for his rude comment by letting her by the dress and come with him to the ball.

**Inara having to teach Mal how to use a sword, and all of the Inara/Mal interactions.

**Finally getting to see Zoe and Wash gettin' groiny...and just, in general, to see them together, because even last week's flashbacks gave no clues as to what got these two crazy kids to fall in love in the first place.

**River surprising everybody with her fake Cockney accent. That girl's just full of surprises! And I am dying to know more about her...and about the blue-hand guys.

**How Mal turned his disadvantage in the duel to an advantage...which reminded me a lot of how he let the guy with the tats get sucked into the ship's propulsion system in "The Train Job."

**The hologrammy pool table.

**Oh, and about what you said about a nobleman dueling with someone beneath his station...remember, in this ep, Mal went to the ball, looking as if he was higher class than he actually is. That's why he went, and not Jayne. Because Mal looked more civilized.

All in all, I really liked it. And something that may be affecting why there's a bit of discord from episode to episode regarding the Alliance is that not only is the show just starting out, but we've been viewing the episodes out of order. And despite the fact that these are stand-alone episodes, it still affects the flow, I think, especially of a show this new. The fact is this episode was meant to air before "Jaynestown" or "Out of Gas," meaning that things that were "previously established" on the show, actually weren't when this episode was first written. Just something to think about. I'm eagerly awaiting two weeks from now, when the show starts getting serialized, thus no more stand-alone ep shuffle lunacy.

Still, I'm a big Jane Espensen fan. I was actually surprised going on the board today and finding a lot of negative things to say about the ep, because this is the first episode I've completely enjoyed, with no qualms whatsoever.
