The ambulance immediately put me in mind of a Russian armed transport helicopter, the Mi-24. Check out the line drawing and photos at the bottom of this page:

I also have one idea on how they could possibly have made it airworthy in such a short time. Think about the thousands of perfectly serviceable aircraft - some brand new - the US armed forces consigned to the scrap heap during the post-WW2 drawdown. Most of those aircraft eventually became razor blades or whatnot, but for a while after the war there were lots of surplus aircraft available pretty much for the asking. Firefly is set in the aftermath of a large-scale civil war, and it's just possible that once again, perfectly serviceable aircraft are being (or have recently been) dumped en masse. Other surplus aircraft could (and most likely would) be converted for civilian purposes - say, as ambulances (which now that I think on it a moment more is also a military purpose). This still wouldn't explain what the thing was doing in a city dump, but it would explain it being quickly fixable. But I suspect that I've now invested more thought in this question than the episode's writer did, so I'm inclined to call it enough.

I agree that the blue hand guys were sloppy, making messes like that on somebody else's turf, where they (probably) can't control who's going to find the bodies or how they'll be disposed of and explained away. But I have to admit - when the first BlueHand pulled out his death wand thingy and the Alliance Major started bleeding from his nose, then his cuticles, and so on... my first thought was, "Yech! That's so creepy!" Which I think was kinda the effect they were going for. It wasn't until my second or third thought that I came up with, "But what happens when the next shift comes in and finds the place littered with corpses?"

Mal sure can be a hardass. Good thing, too. At first, I didn't get what he was doing after he slugged Jayne. Then I thought, "No, he wouldn't do that!" Then I thought, "He's gonna do it." Then he didn't - quite - do it. Now I think he really was about to go through with it, but decided to give Jayne one last chance. Maybe I just need to rewatch the tape,, but it seemed t ome that something changed in Mal's expression when Jayne asked him to lie about what had happened.

Jayne, on the other hand - what a nimrod! But now, with Mal and probably River knowing exactly what he did, maybe he'll be able to keep himself to the straight and narrow. (Or what passes for it on Serenity.) Also, I couldn't quite figure his reaction to Simon's praise and apparent affection when they got back aboard ship. Maybe actually having someone think well of him will be a new and positive experience for Jayne? No, probably not.

As for the doctor in the casket - I don't remember seeig them put the doc in there after Zoe knocked him out, but I did see them open the casket and grab the doc's badge to pass the storage room door.
