I agree with that Shepherd Book is a man who, having led a violent life, is now trying to make expiation by following a more peaceful path. There are, however, a couple of incidents and comments that in my opinion don't quite fit the image of "General Book." Recall Jayne's (?) comment from "Our Mrs. Reynolds": "Someday you're gonna hafta explain to us how a preacher comes to know so much about crime." Think about Book's line in the River's Dream sequence in "Objects in Space": "I don't give a half a hump if you're innocent or not!" And Book's demonstrated ability in "War Stories" doesn't necessarily scream "Military!" to me - certainly not "General!" Small unit actions are not what generals spend their time doing, as a rule. "Safe," as you say, certainly demonstrates that Book was once somebody to be reckoned with in the Alliance (we know he's not a famous face, but he might have previously been a household name).

Personally, I'm leaning more toward a security or police background for the Shepherd - Secret Police, even, if the Alliance maintains such a force. If military, I'd say he was much more likely a Special Forces type, or even an MP, rather than regular Army.
