Subject: Pros and the 1 Iron Golf System

I have been following the 1 Iron Golf website for the past year with my only concern being the lack of pros using this system. A few months ago I learned that Adam Scott's (PGA Tour) father plays 1 Iron Golf clubs and I heard that most pros have their clubs altered to single-length specs. I didn't really believe that the pros did this until I started watching very closely at their set-up and swing on TV which was identical no matter what iron they were using. I also attended a number of tour events this summer and took particular notice of the player's bags and saw that in most cases the irons all stuck out at the same height. Most noticeable was when I attended the US Senior Open and stood on a 200 yard par three where it was definitely evident that the #3 and #4 irons they were hitting were all about the same length as a normal #9 iron. The biggest shock to me was when I ate supper at the Ohio State Hall of Fame Grill in Columbus, Ohio. Next to a picture of Jack Nicklaus was a set of his old clubs and the irons were all exactly the same length.

I now play 1 Irons and quickly found out the reason why I could never get my handicap down using conventional clubs. With my 1 Irons my ball striking improved dramatically overnight and my average scoring has dropped by 10 strokes per round. I have no question that I will be in the low single-digits next summer.

I noticed the same thing about the irons sticking out of the pro's bags at the same height but never gave it much thought until now. Makes sense to me.

I worked for Lynx and then for Callaway in their respective ordering and production departments. It's not a secret in the golf industry that what the pros play and what they endorse are two different things, the only thing in common being the brand name on their clubs. When I worked for Lynx Fred Couples had his own specially designed club-head molds that produced irons completely different than anything Lynx offered even though they carried the Lynx name on them. I also know that Phil Mickelson's irons have always been notorious for very strong loft angles, ground soles, upright lie angles, and other modifications that made his clubs much different than what his sponsors sold.

I've seen bags on tour where the irons are all sticking out at the same height and it doesn't surprise me since I know from reliable sources that Moe Norman and other pros played single length irons during their careers.
