Subject: Lie Angle Appropriate for Moe Norman Single Axis Golf Swing?

David,

In the Moe Norman single axis swing that Todd and Tim Graves of the Graves Golf Academy teach, the club at set-up is aligned in a straight line with the trail arm that extends through the vertical center point of the back. I noticed that the drawings of the set-up position that you have on your Web site with the 1 Iron clubs extends higher up on the back closer to the shoulder blade level. If I take my address postion using the Moe Norman single axis set-up where my distance from the ball and posture (angle of back) align the club shaft with my trail arm and extending through the center point of my back would your 63.5 degree lie angle still be the optimum for this set-up? It would seem that as the height of the golfer changes if the lie angle were held the same that using the Moe Norman single axes set-up would produce different alignment points through the back or if aligned with the center of the back then the toe of the club would either be too upright at impact (even with shaft flex) or possibly even too flat of a lie angle at impact. Am I looking at this correctly? I have seen a lot of swing analysis comparison pictures and video that Todd and Tim Graves have collected from conventional pro golfers and the Moe Norman single axis swing - you can see a lot of this analysis on their Web site. I have seen where you have stated where the impact position (club position and swing plane)of conventional and single axis golfers is the same, and their comparison video shots show this to be true. The common position is that the shaft angle of the club at impact extends trough the trail arm through to the vertical center point of the back. I would like to get your thoughts on this and how the design of your 1 Irons would work in conjunction with the Moe Norman single axis set-up. I apologize for this post being so long, but I am very interested in your clubs if you can assure/convince me the 1 Iron lie angle will work with my Moe Norman single axis set-up. Thank you.... John S.

John,

The address position using any of the various swing methods (conventional, single-axis, simple swing, etc.) is irrelevant. As you mention, the important point is the position at impact, and regardless of the swing method used this position will be identical. The design of 1 Iron Golf clubs is based upon the ideal impact position and will improve your performance using any swing method.

It may be interesting to note that Dave Predzin (Master Teaching Pro with Graves Brothers Golf) has been playing 1 Irons for four years and recommends them to his students (his wife also plays 1 Irons). You can check out his bio from the Graves Brothers website here: http://swinglikemoe.com/index.php?customernumber=28958371460566&pr=Dave_Predzin

Thanks David. I will check out Dave Predzin's web site and may contact him to discuss the 1 Iron clubs with him further and how they have worked for him with the Moe Norman single axis swing. Thanks again for the input. John S.
