Subject: Just Receive My New 1 Iron Clubs

Just received my new clubs. Wow they look GREAT!! I couldn't wait to get to the range. Here in Texas it was 102 deg. today, but I just had to do IT. Just like David said, I had to hit every club 3i - LW. Out of all the clubs I hit the 3i the best (go figure). By the end of the 1st bucket of ball really started to hit some great shots.
I had to really make an effort to keep the ball in the center of my stance. This is going to take some getting use too!

I will keep you posted on my progress

Thanks,

Ed

2nd day to the range. I was very sore from yesterday because I hit way to many balls (160). Today was a better day. I started out with the 8i as Dave recommended in the playability tips. Once I was continuely hitting the sweet spot, I taped the bottom of the clubs hiding the numbers on the clubs (3i - pw). I randomly picked a club and focused on same setup and swing. Out of 16 shot, 2 with each club before revealing the number. I only had 2 miss hits 1 with the 5i and 1 with the pw.
I haven't really focused on distance yet, just trying to focusing on the alignment, setup and swing right now

These clubs are the REAL DEAL

Thanks, Dave

I went out on the golf course after only two trips to the range. As David says, it was too much pressure to make good shots. when I did hit a good shot, boy did it GO. I need a little more time at the range. Normally I shoot in the low 90's or high 80's. I shot 100, haven't see that in a very long time. I was trying to figure out too much on the course, (stance, swing, ball position, etc)

Ed: Thank you for sharing the updates on your experiences with the 1-Irons. As you are finding out, there are some minor swing adjustments that need to be made, since every club is the same length and ball position is center-of-stance. Once you ingrain those "mental adjustments", you will be amazed at the accuracy and distance your new 1-Irons give you! To make your practice time at the range more profitable, try doing what I teach my new golf students: don't just "hit" balls, "play" a course that, in your mind, you are familar with. Start with your driver, then a fairway wood, then a couple of irons (long and short). Play the whole course "in your mind". On every shot, always pick a target and go thru your total master set-up. I teach my students to remember "GBSAPS", or Grip, Ball position, Stance, Alignment, Posture and Swing. If you do this for EVERY practice shot you take, your consistency will greatly improve and the 1-Iron swing will quickly ingrain. When you play a "real" course, everything will become automatic so you don't have to focus on GBSAPS, only on course management. Hopes this helps a little. Keep us updated on your progress. Hit 'em straight! R2

played a round today. Shot an 88 which is about avg for me. Here are some things that I noticed during the round.
1. I purchased the 3wood - lob wedge.
2. I still use my R11 taylormade driver

I could not get off the TEE. I hit 1 great drive with the driver and 1 great drive with the 3w. I think that the driver is messing up my swing. Started hooking the ball bad.

I did notice that although I did not get off the tee well, I hit a lot more solid shots with my IRONS. I did take an extra club as have not reached my full potential on distance yet(I did hit some shots longer than normal). In total I had 8 Pars and should have had 12 (miss some easy putts)

I'm wondering if I should get my driver cut shorter or sell the driver and purchase a 1 iron driver.

Any thoughts

thanks
Ed

yes the longer driver is playing havoc with your swing. Cutting down the driver destroys what little playability it has, Dont cut it just try placing your grip lower on the shaft,

The 1iron 3 wood plays very well as a driver, try it for a while off the T before a big purchase, then if more distance is required get the 1iron driver.

The 1iron driver works very well.

A good guide is place a tape around the grip every one inch from the butt end down. Hit 10 balls with each tape position, you will find there will suddenly be a sweet spot feel. and straight ball flight. What I found was at end of grip I would fade, the third tape position perfect straight to baby draw, farther down prone to some hooks.

After measuring from the tape where I hit the best, for me it ended up being 44"

Ed: Measure your Wrist-to-Floor (WTF) measurement per the instructions on this site. That will give you a good idea of how long your driver should be. My WTF is 34.5" and my 1-Iron driver is 43" long. I had several students that used the R-11 driver and in EVERY case, their driver was simply too long for them. I took them to the range and had them wrap a rubber band around the top end of the grip, and had them start hitting shots and moving the rubber band down the grip until they found where they were most consistent with their drives (it's usually 1" to 2" down the shaft). Any good club fitter can take that amount off, regrip the club, and add lead tape to the head to compensate. They will also know where to place the tape to help offset any slices or hooks. I still have several old drivers that have all been cut down to about 43" and use them to show my students what a great improvement it makes to use a driver that is shorter than the off-the-shelf junk being made these days. The shorter driver is much more accurate, and hits just as long, than the 45" and 46" drivers out there today. Also, you may want to just use your 3-wood in place of your driver if you don't want to cut it down or get a new one. I've found that most golfers can hit it as long as their driver. Good luck and let us know how things go. R2
