Subject: New 1 Iron Golf Club Owner

I'm 68 and carry a 13 handicap. I've been looking to simplyfy my game as my body doesn't move like it used to.
I ordered the 3-5-7 fairway woods and the 5-SW irons. The first thing I did was read Dave's book. My advice to everyone is to read the book first. This will help you understand the clubs and how to get the best performance from them.
After considerable practicing on the range, I've noticed my shots are straighter but I'm not as long with the new irons as I am with my old. My conclusion is straight is better.
I had a conversation with Dave about the length and he informed me this will come with more practice as I learn his way of putting torque into my swing.

Repeating the same swing and set up for all clubs will definitley simplyfy my game.

Ron,

It takes a number of trips to the range in order to become acclimated to, and comfortable with, using the same swing, etc. with all of your clubs. This is especially true for those who have been playing standard varying length clubs for many years and have the different swings, set-ups, ball positions, and so forth that are required for each individual golf club so strongly ingrained. However, with each trip to the range and each round of golf with your new 1 Irons your new single swing, set-up, ball position, and swing plane will become more and more ingrained. This results in an extreme level of confidence and resultant increased power on every shot.

Believe me when I say that over the course of the next month you will see an increase in distance with every club in your bag.

I started typing my reply earlier this morning then left it open on my computer and finished a few minutes ago. My experience is very much in line with David's thoughts.

I bought my 1Irons last October (3 iron through lob wedge and 3 and 5 wood - driver came about 6 weeks later). Right away I felt I was making better contact, but lost about 1 clubs distance (10 yards or so) on every club. After about a month with the clubs, that distance came back. Now I am about 6 months into the process, and am now about 7-10 yards longer with every club than I used to be.

My 1Irons are equal to the length of my 8 iron in my olds set of clubs (I hit my old 8 iron very well consistently). I did not tell David Lake that that was my favorite club or the length of my former 8 iron. When I got the clubs and that was the exact length - I was encouraged that the theory behind the clubs was correct.

The trick for me is that for every swing with every club from lob wedge to 3 iron, I have to consciously think during my set up and swing routine, "this is an 8 iron, swing with an 8 iron." As I did this both at the range and on the course, I was able to "groove" my swing to only be my 8 iron swing. I am 37 years old and have played golf since I was seven, with probably 50 lessons throughout the 30 years. At first, it is very hard to step up seeing a 3 iron and not let you subconscious take over and make your "normal" 3 iron set up and swing - same for pitching wedge. But quickly, within the first 30 days or so, I was able to "trick" my mind and body into thinking 8 iron and set up and swing that way. Then my distance came back. Over time my distance has improved, and I feel like I am swinging easier than I used to.

This was my answer to David's recommendation of having someone hand you a club at the range and not tell you what it is. It works - but clearing out of your mind and body old routines and setups takes time.

In 6 months I have dropped from a 13 handicap to a 9 handicap (including cold winter in Idaho) and am still making improvements. For me, it is just simpler to practice one swing.

I hope this helps,
Jonathan
