Subject: 20-handicapper with new set of 1 Irons

My golf game can best be characterized as one of inconsistency, so it's not surprising I was drawn to this site like a moth to a flame when I stumbled upon it quite by accident.

I'm 38, I started playing in my teens (no lessons), and my best scores ever are a couple of 80s on a VERY short par-71 course locally. About 6-7 years ago I was a 14, but I had ankle surgery and lost a year of playing, and have never quite gotten anything going since. I'm the type of hacker who can play a string of 10-12 consecutive holes in +4, but can also have three or four 8s on my scorecard at the end of the day. Frustrating ain't the word for it.

The lure of finding consistency through single-length clubs spurred me to sell my Callaways on eBay and take the plunge. I received my irons (3-PW, SW, LW) last Saturday and immediately went out to the range. I tried my best to follow the swing tips and take only 1/2 shots, but I couldn't do it. Still, I was encouraged.

On Sunday I went back out and hit every iron. I started with 1/2 shots and then went to full swings. I was erratic and still had not "grooved" the one swing I need to make. Day 2 was discouraging, as I believe I was struggling with the mental aspect of doing the same thing with a 3-iron I did with a PW.

I took a couple of days off and hit the range again Wednesday night. All I can say is, wow. After warming up with some 1/2 shots from my PW, I grabbed the 3-iron. A few 1/2 shots right on the sweetspot locked me in, and I proceeded to stripe a half-dozen in a row down the middle. I have no idea about distance because this range isn't well marked, but judging by how they felt I'm not worried. The rest of the bucket was great as well. I won't say I didn't miss some shots -- I am a hacker, after all -- but it may have been the best bucket of balls I've ever hit.

What really struck me, though, was the accuracy. For the first time in a long time, I felt as though I actually knew where the ball would go. I only have 1 Iron irons (come on, David, offer those woods in LH!), but after swinging them I think it has even helped me play with my standard driver and 3W because I'm swinging more smoothly and under control.

I am very excited about taking these clubs to the course on Saturday. I have tee times lined up both Sat. and Sun. a.m., and I'll be back to report the results next week.

Sorry for the long post!

[> [> Saturday and Sunday results -- E-ball, 08:46:01 06/09/08 Mon

Played the new 1 Irons both Saturday and Sunday morning this weekend. The results were up and down. On Saturday, we played a local public course and I shot a very poor score, even for me. I found my problems existed in two areas -- my driver was extremely erratic (no fault of the 1 Irons there), and my short game absolutely sucked (to put it as nicely as I can). I hit some nice full irons and the distances seemed to be good, however inside of 60 yards I found myself questioning everything. Do I choke down on the club as I normally would? Where is the proper ball position? Hands forward or back? With full swings I didn't have a problem utilizing the same stance and ball position, but these short shots had me befuddled. I shot a horrendous 106.

On Sunday I made two significant changes in strategy -- I left the driver at home, and I told myself I'd play the short chips and pitches in the way I was most comfortable, even if that meant choking down, changing my stance, or moving ball position around. I used only the LW for shots inside 60 yards, and only the 8-iron for all chips.

The results were encouraging. Playing on a more difficult (and longer) course, I shot a 93 that included a quadruple bogey on a par 3. I began the round with five consecutive double bogeys, but over my last 13 holes I had two birdies, two pars, seven bogeys, a double, and the quad.

My shot of the day -- the one that keeps you coming back -- was on a 185-yard uphill par 3 with the pin in the back. I figure it was playing about 195-200, and I stuck my new 3-iron about 22 feet to the left of the pin. I then rolled in the birdie.

My summary of the weekend: I like these clubs, but I need to continue to devote some practice time during the week to groove my swing. When I'm missing it's consistently a 'toe' hit, so I guess I'm standing a little too far away from the ball?

I'll try to add posts to this thread as I continue to experiment.
