Subject: can 1 irons help

I have arthritis in my wrists which prevents any wrist hinge, this I have largely overcome in the past 10 years but over the past 4 yrs, 2 of which I did not play due to waiting for a hip replacement, I have lost distance, having never been a long hitter so the loss of any distance comes very hard to me, my hcp has gone from 11 to 18 and this is making me feel like stopping altogether although I am not a quitter and would hate to do that but when I am on the course I feel bloody useless and so very frustrated

David,

1 Irons cannot help your lack of wrist hinge due to arthritis. However, they can help to improve your distance over conventional sets of clubs through consistent solid center-face ball contact. As well, since the strength of the 1 Iron Golf System lies in the use of only one swing, swing posture, and ball position, the more you play the better your ball striking becomes.

Honestly, in my personal opinion, I think your situation might require a bit more.
I think you should see a qualified custom clubfitter. If you were only struggling with consistency then the 1-irons would most likely help. But given your arthritis and the hip replacement you might need a custom set built for your needs and your current swing.

But I've only been golfing for 2 years, and am far from an expert on any of this stuff. This is just my opinion.

I disagree. By going to a "qualified" custom clubfitter all you'll get is a new set of clubs that don't fit. You're complaining about the clubs you have now that don't produce enough distance and you'll end up with the same thing if you stay with regular golf clubs.

Why would the clubfitter produce clubs that don't fit? What makes you think that they would produce a "regular" set of clubs for him? If they did that, then they're not a qualified clubfitter, they're just someone who builds clubs.

It doesn't sound like the lack of distance is caused solely by the clubs, it sounds like it's caused by physical conditions and limitations.

How do you get clubs that fit someone with no wrist hinge due to arthritis without having them custom fitted?

David M., I am going to guess that your physical activity was pretty limited while waiting for your hip replacement. I would suggest that you talk to a personal trainer-if you have not already- and see if he/she can't recover some of that distance for you through some stretching, pilates, etc type work outs.

Another thought is to look into Lever Power Golf. Its an alternative swing method that uses forearm rotation and bending of the left arm to generate power and takes the wrists out of the swing.

I don't own 1 irons yet so I can't comment on the benefit of the clubs but i will say the majority of the posts about I see around the net are positive so it can't hurt to try em.

[> have you tried glucosamin/chondroitin? -- Chris, 06:04:35 07/04/08 Fri

David, sorry to hear about your frustration--I too fight arthritis but it definitely sounds like you have a tougher row to hoe.

For years now I've been taking a supplement that combines glucosamin and chondroitin, substances that the body needs to properly produce healthy lubicrated joints. The theory is that as you get older the body produces less of those substances, but if it gets them it can still do its work. This actually started out as a vetrinary treatment for horses and dogs. I'm convinced I couldn't be playing golf (or typing comfortably) without it. You can find it in drugstores these days; sometimes they sell them separately but usually combined. It's not a miracle cure and it took three or four weeks before I began to notice an improvement, but it definitely helps me.

Good luck.
