Subject: confession...and breakthrough

So I have to confess...all these past several months that I've been using 1 Irons, they weren't properly fit...and it was all my fault. It's partly because my W-T-F measurements were slightly ambiguous (not DEFINITELY a 36 or 37, could sometimes go either way) and maybe I was trying to delude myself into thinking I was a little bit taller than I am, but I have to admit I was probably also still buying into the "I can get just a bit more distance with that half-inch of length" mentality. Well, I played them the way they were for a few months and saw some improvement, but I knew there was better in me. In my practice sessions I observed that I could actually choke all the way down, so my trail index finger was off the grip, and could still hit the ball very nearly as far as I normally would while having a better idea where the ball was going. So with this new-found realization that shaft length really is just VASTLY less important to overall distance than is a comfortable swing, I said "enough is enough." I trimmed my irons down a half inch to where they SHOULD be, replaced the unusual grips I had installed because I no longer liked them, and after only testing out one of the wedges, I went and played a round with my brother and a friend.

WOW.

You wouldn't think that such a small adjustment as 1/2 inch length and a better-fitting grip could make a huge difference...but believe me, IT DOES. Before today the best rounds I'd ever shot were a solitary round of 89 on a par 71 and 84-85-86 on a par 62. Today, at a course I've never played before with no warmup at all, I shot ten-over-par 82. I hit 1 OB and some errant drives with my non-1-Iron driver and failed to save some pars with short wedge shots and the putter.

So overnight, I bested my P.R. by 8 shots to par! You may not believe it, and part of me doesn't either, but it's true. Now that I know what I need to work on, I can make similar adjustments to my driver and dial in my short game and things will just get better and better. So let this be a lesson to you: single length clubs (done RIGHT!!!) can absolutely transform your game.

Paul, are you still seeing the significant difference in your ball-striking since making this small adjustment? I'm really intrigued by your experience because I have a funny feeling that I may be in the same boat as you.

I haven't experienced the great change in ball-striking since going to the 1-Irons, but after reading your post, I have started to wonder (for a couple of reasons) if I have mis-measured my WTF. I'm just not sure that how much difference it will make, and whether the results would be worth the expense of making the change.

A couple of questions for people on the board:

1. If I find that my arm length is in the 35-35.9" range, rather than 36-36.9", does anyone know how much I would shorten my club?

2. I can take off and put on grips -- I have regripped clubs before. However, I have never shortened a club. Is it just a matter of taking a hacksaw to it, or is there more to it? If it's pretty straightforward, what is the best tool for doing this? I'm not sure I can justify the $150 (to myself or, more importantly, my wife) to take a quarter of an inch or so off my irons, but being a bit of a DIY type guy, I might be able to justify investing a Saturday afternoon in my shop.

Sorry, but I thought of another question after I posted.

Does butt trimming change the flex of the club? How much can a shaft be trimmed before significantly altering either the stiffness or the flex point?

Also, I don't know anything about how the flex changes...I think I read Mr. Lake say that you can safely cut 1/2 inch off the butt end without any problems...all I know is that the clubs perform just as well and feel better at setup. I went to the range yesterday, cuz I can actually afford to now, and they worked great. Firing all my 3-irons right at a telephone pole on the back of the range.

To shorten the shaft I just used a pipe cutter...you could probably use a saw though.
