Subject: Driver Tee Height

For some of you guys who are hitting the 1 iron Driver, how high are you teeing up the ball since it is played further back in the stance from a typical driver (designed for middle of stance I understand)? Just wanted to get an idea where I might start when I take mine out. Thanks!

the ball is just forward of center of body so the driver for me is actually dead center leading edge.. Less than half the ball from the top of the driver T height so it just works out I don't need the oversize T's.

I have tried lower and higher so I get the best distance carry and role with about a third of the ball aligned with leading top edge. the reason this works is because the swing becomes very level vs swing-ing up too much on the driver.

For anyone wanting to confirm where they actually make impact on the driver's face try this . . .

Hold your driver by the shaft close to the head with the face of the club toward the sky. Take a ball and drop it onto the face with your other hand from about 2 inches above. You will be able to find the actual sweet spot very quickly. It will be the location where the ball hops directly back toward your hand with the corresponding "sweet spot sound." Draw a thin circle around that exact spot about the size of a quarter.

Now go to the practice tee.

Take your Sharpie and make a dot the size of a nickel on the back of the ball. When you hit the ball it will leave a corresponding mark on your driver's face. One you get your hits inside of the quarter-sized circle you drew at home you know you have the exact tee position to take advantage of your particular driver. Hint: Take a wet rag with you to the range, so you can wipe the face from time to time. It may take about 10 shots to find the exact tee position for you.

One more suggestion. I agree with Pedro about the every so slightly forward of center position -- and I mean - for me -- it is ever so slightly forward. However, sometimes you need to play a higher shot off the tee (to cut the tall trees guarding the corner, etc.) In this case you might want to tee your shot more forward to get more height on your shot. This will demand you tee the ball slightly higher. Of course, this means you need to determine two different tee heights -- one for your standard shot you will use 95% of the time, and 1 for the high shot you will require from time to time. Again, the Sharpie trick will tell you all you need to know.

Michael

Paul: I've found that tee height actually has very little to do with ball flight. It is the angle or amount of spine "tilt" that you set during your master set-up that determines ball flight. The more you tilt your spine toward the rear foot, the higher the ball flight. The more upright you stand, the lower your ball flight. I keep the ball center-of-stance for every club. I also teach my new students to not worry about tee height, but to set and maintain a constant spine tilt until ball impact. You can tee the ball up really high and hit it low, or tee it very low and hit it high, simply by adjusting your spine tilt. Hopes this helps a little. Hit 'em straight! R2
