Subject: Fairway Clubs

David,

I have your #3 and #5 fairway metals along with a full set of the Blackstone irons. I am making solid contact with the irons but am struggling with the fairway clubs both off the turf and off the tee. I am using the same swing as the irons but have a difficult time making solid contact. Any suggestions?

MG11,

You should not use the exact same swing with your fairway woods as you do with your irons. The additional length of your woods dictates a flatter swing plane than the irons which allows you to sweep the ball from the turf as opposed to hitting down and through as you do with your irons. Visualize skipping a stone on the water when making your fairway woods swing. Also, I would suggest a slightly forward ball position with the fairway woods which will encourage this sweeping action.
